"Changes have been many since I started receiving transfers from GiveDirectly. I have developed ideas after ideas which I have seen them coming to reality when I work on them. At the moment I have given myself a challenge with the new idea which I developed. I would wish to see a poultry project established in our household. This is so realistic based on the fact that I am sure of the source of finances and it is only a test of time before I start putting up the structure. This project in my speculations would have started generating income within the next six months."

"Lack of a reliable source of income has been the biggest hardship in life. My husband works as a loader in one of the maize millers in Mombasa. The nature of that job is dusty and toilsome. It has resulted in poor health and subsequently low productivity at work since he fails to report to work in some days. This again translates into poor pay of which myself and our children are largely affected. In most cases, we are unable to meet the educational needs of the children as well as his medical attention. This transfers will help us in bettering our lives. First of all, my husband will join me at home and assist in running the projects that we have agreed to put up. He is the one to operate the motorcycle taxi given that he has vast experience in it. I believe if we join our hands together, the family's wellbeing will greatly improve."

"Back then, my husband and I had invested heavily in livestock raising, little did we know that all would be swept away by famine that befell us in the year 2016. This to us was the biggest hardship we have ever faced. It resulted in financial instability that forced my husband to leave home in search of casual jobs in Mombasa. Since then, we haven't been able to prepare our land in time for planting, and subsequently leading to low maize yield because people here depend on oxen, something that we are unable to hire. Am glad we will be able to bring back the lost glory through this cash transfers. We will purchase oxen to assist us in farming."

"In an area like ours where the only reliable economic activities are subsistence farming, charcoal burning and livestock keeping, a house wife like me is forced to fully depend on her husband. Considering my husband's livestock business whose capital is borrowed from friends, the profit earned is usually divided equally with the lender. This makes his income unreliable since it can not sustain our family needs. Receiving this money means providing capital to my husband in order to invest in his business. I will use part of the transfers to repair my house and the remaining amount will support our children's education."

received a $525 second payment.
"The transfer has enabled me to buy two more cows to my cowshed that I never anticipated. I could only wait for them to reproduce and increase in number, not by buying since I could not afford them. Having more cows to me means that I will be selling more milk unlike before, thus increase in my income. If it had not been GiveDirectly coming to our village, I would not have acquired these additional cows."

Mary
received a $23 eleventh payment.
"In the next six months, I expect my life to change in that, I will have built a kitchen. This will prevent us from the challenges and discomfort that comes with not having one such as not being able to cook during the rainy seasons. The kitchen will also be used as a sleeping place for my children. Currently, they sleep at my relative's place. It has been inconveniencing especially when it rains and I have to escort them to rest. I have to also cook early to avoid the evening rains."

"Despite it being a love of many men in my community, palm wine does not fetch very good profits because its supply exceeds the demand. This has made it extremely difficult for me to meet all my family's needs such as food, education and medication for my elder brother who is both mentally ill and epileptic. With no husband to support me, life gets very tough at times when I hardly make any money. I'm grateful for Give Directly though because now I will be more financially stable. "
