Caroline
received a $22 fourteenth payment.
"I plan to save and buy building materials like cement and sand to use in plastering my mother's house as she has a mud smeared house which is hectic to maintain. I have a sibling who is sitting for the final exams in primary school so I want to save in the next six months so that when she joins secondary school, we can have a fallback plan."

"I am a poultry farmer.I have around a hundred chicken.I have always wished that I could expand this venture. However, this has not been possible more especially because I have not been able to build a good poultry house and fence it to restrict the chicken due to lack of money.Sometimes am forced into dispute with my neighbours when they wander into their vegetable farms.Receiving this money means that I will be a ble to buy enough materials to fence, build a modern poultry house and buy some more chicken for rearing"

"Receiving this money means it will enable me but oxen and ox-plough for ploughing. I will be using these oxen as source of labour for ploughing where to plant crops as earlier as possible. This will encourage earlier harvests hence there may be less hunger in my family."

Dama
received a $528 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying a second-hand motorcycle at KES 35000. I believe it will help me in fetching water from the dam which is very far from my home. Previously I used to carry heavy jerrycans which were very tiresome. I had even started having back pains as a result of this. I am happy I will not have to carry water anymore. Apart from that, I will also be earning income from this business. It will be used in transporting goods and a means of transport to people in our village. In addition to that, I also bought five goats at KES 12500. I am planning to sell the offsprings when they mature and buy a pair of oxen in the near future. I decided to expand my business of selling some vegetables with the remaining amount of money."

"I expect my life to change in the next six months in that I want to have 50 plastic chairs. This is because it is a business which is not expensive to maintain and the profits help me improve my life. Expanding the business by adding more stock helps me get an extra income to sustain my life."

"Our biggest hardship is insufficient finances to meet our needs of food, housing etc with much ease. I am a widow with absolutely no source of income, only depending on my children who do odd jobs at construction sites in Bamba center. With as little pay as 2 dollars a day, nothing much can be achieved. "

"A decent source of income especially starting a shop business is what receiving this money means to me since as at today, I depend on tapping coconut wine for sell in order to earn a living. This job is very tiresome and low paying and therefore, when I receive my grant from GiveDirectly, my plan was to meet my longest desire of owning a stable job and this will help me to meet my family's basic needs without struggling much. Part of my transfers will be invested in my children's education and also constructing a separate structure for my kids. This will change my livelihood, a transformation that I have wished for long."

"I expect my life to change in the next six months in that I would have built a new house and cleared school fees arrears for my children who are still in school. I don't always feel happy when I see my children being sent home for the same. I want to make the situation better after building a house for myself."
