"The biggest hardship in my life is lack of credible source of income in order to support build a decent house. My sourc of income is narrow and I have to squeeze school fees, feeding and medication from it which is not sufficient. I sleep in a grass thatched house but it has become increasingly very difficult to find grass for thatching. The house leaks when it rains and hence it is giving way and not able to provide good shelter."

"My expectation in the next few months is to have a good dairy project with some good breed of cows. I want to maximize milk production from this project for both household use and commercial use for an income. Once I have this project running, I want to enroll and continue with my studies. This is important for me because it will help me manage and use my resources well and improve my chances of landing a better job."

"In the next six months, I plan to save the transfers and use the savings to boost my foodstuff business. Right now, I do not have much stock and I building a good customer base. I know very soon the demand will surpass my stock and I would not want to lose customers because I cannot serve their needs well. This is why I plan to boost the business and make maximum profit from it when I can."

"Receiving this money means that I will be able to actualize my plans of rearing sheep.I have always seen this as a great investment because sheep multiply quite quickly and having some will help me meet my other long term goals. My family owns a large piece of land and therefore I do not see any challenge with this venture since there will be enough pasture. In a few years,I will have quite a flock which I will sell then buy a plot at a nearby town where I can put up a building for commercial purposes"

"A few years ago,I fell sick.It took a while for a proper diagnosis to be found so that treatment can begin. For four years, the doctors I visited kept prescribing medication for a wrong diagnosis and in those years I was bedridden. This illness and recurrent treatment cost my family a lot of resources. When I was finally diagnosed with Tuberculosis,my backbone had already been affected badly.Upto today,I cannot walk straight and as such I cannot perform most duties.I am therefore forced to have someone do most farming activities which given my age,I could still be in a position to perform. This is the biggest hardship I have faced."

"I have plans for saving the coming transfers and use them to purchase chicken for rearing. I believe that in the next six months I'll have raised enough money and most likely the number of the chicken will have increased. I know once I establish this business I will officially stop doing casual jobs. This investment is enough to run my family and meet all our basic needs."

Joyce
received a $530 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I was yearning to own one before but since I did not have enough money I had been unable. I used to buy milk from a neighbor and it was so costly for me. I entirely depended on casual jobs in the village to get some money to meet all the basic needs of the family including paying school fees for my children. I did not have time to bond with my children well because most of the time I could wake up early in the morning to look for a job and come home late. I knew this was not good at all but I could not help but go looking for those jobs to sustain my family. At times there were no casual jobs in the village and this meant we could go without some of the basic needs at home. Currently, I have devoted most of my time on my own farm because of the fact that I no longer do much of the casual jobs. I have enough milk for my family and I sell the surplus to meet other basic needs for the family. I also have enough time to bond with my children which I did not have before I received the transfer. My children are no longer sent home to collect school fees because I cleared their fees and this had led to the improvement of performance."

John
received a $530 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my life that has been brought about by these transfers is that I have paid school fees for my son who is in university. I used to do small businesses and also dairy keeping which gives me an income to meet the basic needs of the family and school fees for my children. These two activities were not enough to meet all the basic needs and school fees at the same time and sometimes my children were sent home to collect school fees. This was affecting their performance in a great way and was giving me a lot of worries. Currently, I have cleared the school fees for all my children and the are happy and studying without any worry, their performance has improved compared to the previous semester. This has given me peace of mind to concentrate on other activities at home including doing horticulture and dairy farming. I have enough food for the family because I have devoted my time on the farm, we no longer buy food like before. We are so grateful for the support we received from GiveDirectly since it has changed our living standards by a great extent."

Helida
received a $22 eighteenth payment.
"My aim is to raise money for purchasing a cow. Since cows are expensive, I'm planning to purchase a pig with the coming transfers so that after it has given birth I'll sell the young ones in order to raise money for purchasing a cow. Therefore, in the next six months, I expect to have bought enough pigs that will enable me to reach my target. I am hopeful that I will be able to reach my goal by the end of this year."
