Hillary
received a $22 twentieth payment.
"My expectation in the near future is to buy an extra piece of land. To do this, I want to venture into tea seedlings development by the use of a tea nursery. I will plant some of these seedlings in my farm and sell the rest to my villages. The proceeds thereof will help me acquire a piece of land. The current piece we are currently staying in is quite small and my children will need somewhere to develop themselves. This will reduce the conflicts that usually results from limited resources."

Naomy
received a $537 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk and it was so costly for me. I depend on manuals jobs in the village to earn an income to meet all the basic needs of my family. Sometimes I could go to the forest to fetch firewood to sell to get money for the basic needs. I could wake up early in the morning to look for casual jobs and come back late at night. I had no much time to interact and bond with my family. Buying cow was not on my list because I had no continuous source of income or savings to use. Currently, I have a dairy cow. I have enough milk for my family used and I sell the surplus milk to earn an income to meet other basic needs including paying school fees for my children. I no longer do much of the casual jobs like before. I have devoted much of my time on my own farm. I am so much grateful for the support because it has improved our standard of living."

Janet
received a $22 twentieth payment.
"Previously, I managed to prepare a piece of land and plant some beans with the transfers which I received from Give Directly. I believe I would have harvested the beans and would have sold it and spend the money to buy a heifer. This would be an asset to me as the heifer appreciates with time and after some time it will reproduce and increase in number."

"I was still sleeping when I received a message notification on my phone. Since I could not read its contents due to my age, I waited till daybreak so that I would request my son to read it for me. When he informed me about the good news, I became so happy as I had never received such an amount before."

Karisa
received a $519 second payment.
"My life is now different than it used to be. I have my sons who are in colleges and this money has greatly helped me in clearing their fee arrears. Ever since receiving this transfer, their education has never been interrupted for failure to pay their tuition on time. I also own a pair of oxen which I am using to plough my farm. Previously, I was using hoes to prepare and plant, which were tiresome and ineffective thus at times bigger acreage was left uncultivated because hiring oxen was costly. The acquisition of this pair is very important to me because I am assured of doing my farming timely. I will no longer be hiring, instead I will also be hiring to them at a fee during the planting season."

"My children are happily in school because of the financial assistance I received from GiveDirectly. I was facing challenges in paying for their school fees on time, which resulted to them being sent home at times as learning continued. When I received the money, I paid in advance which gave me enough time to prepare for their next payments. In addition, I am also owning a cow and a bull, which I acquired through this transfer. I will be getting milk firm the cow for my family consumption. In addition, I can as well sell the surplus to earn some cash. The bull will help me in ploughing my farm since I have a complete pair. I will no longer be hiring oxen during the planting season, instead I will hire to them at a fee, which is an income to me."

"Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I was hiring oxen to plough my farm during the planting season and paying for this service was costly. However, my life is now different in that I now have my own pair of oxen for ploughing my farm. I am no longer hiring from anyone. I had also acquired a plot of land and my plan was to build a rental house, but I had not yet completed the payment. It's only through this transfer that I was able to clear the cost, and I am now in full possession of the plot. Soon I will be purchasing building materials to begin the construction. This is an investment which I will be earning a good income."

"The coming of GiveDirectly to me was the biggest miracle because I never imagined of a day that I would own a cow and goats. If I was to buy them at my own cost, then I wouldn't be having any. Owning livestock to me is the biggest achievement I can speak of because once this cow and goats reproduce, then I will be able to sell the offsprings and earn some money. Thus having these living assets to me is a form of saving for the future. I also have a solar panel that I acquired through this money. I was previously using lamps which consumed a lot of fuel, which means that I had to incur costs in buying kerosene. With the solar panel, lighting is adequate thus relieving me the cost of buying kerosene. Now I can comfortably charge my phone and neighbors phones at a fee, I do not have to depend on electricity since accessing it in our area is costly, thus having the solar is the best alternative source of energy to me."
