Joyce
received a $534 initial payment.
"I used part of my recent transfer to build a new house, the remaining amount was used to meet hospital bills for my husband and pay school fees for my son and daughter who are in various schools. My husband has been ailing for sometime now and I always hoped against hope that one day I would get some money and meet his medical expenses until GiveDirectly came through for us. I was also able to use part of the transfer to pay school fees for my two children who are in various schools and be assured that they are not going to be sent home for school fees throughout this term."

John
received a $517 second payment.
"The biggest difference is that I have put up a nice house that improved my home even as I continue to pay school fees for my children using the menial jobs I do. I rely on casual jobs to provide for my family. This source of income would not have been sufficient to build a house as well as pay school fees. Because of GiveDireclty, it became possible for me to keep my children in school and improve my home."

Fatuma
received a $517 second payment.
"I have always relied on a small income from casual work to raise money to meet both my needs and that of my family. It has always been a struggle because casual work is very inconsistent and worse, it does not pay much. Anytime I got paid, I would use the payment on the basic needs of the family and would struggle to pay school fees for my children in time. They would be sent home and stay for even a week as I was still struggling to get the money. In most cases, I ended up in taking debts which I could not pay. GD transfers did not only help me to clear fees arrears for my children but also to pay back all the debts I had."

Katsele
received a $517 second payment.
"The fact that I have my own livestock makes me proud. I walk in the village with pride for I have also achieved what many have achieved in the community. The cows will be helpful because I will use them for ploughing and I won't spend any more on hiring someone to plough my farm. Since water is scarce in my area, I will also use the cows with a hand-cart to fetch water in a nearby river at a cost for other which will also be a source of income. Feeding the cows too does not require much hence it will not be a burden to me"

Loice
received a $534 second payment.
"I did not know I could own livestock now. I had a low income from odd jobs in the village because I did not have the qualifications to get a good job in the village. I had to put up with my small income and work hard to make my life better. I had struggled for two years now but there was no big difference in my life until I received my transfer from GD. I was able to start a business and even use part of the transfer to buy livestock such as a cow and a goat. I feel wealthy because I know I can never beg again for financial help when I have my livestock. I can sell to get money to meet my needs."

Joyce
received a $517 second payment.
"The biggest difference in my life because of these transfers is that I now have my own cow which was a dream come true. I have desired to own my livestock but because I had a low income from casual work from ploughing in other peoples' farm. It was very difficult to raise enough money to buy even a goat. This is why when I got my transfer, I could not have spent the whole of it without fulfilling the one goal I have been waiting on. I feel so proud of the step I have made because when the cow reproduces, I have enough milk both for family consumption and selling to raise an income. I can also sell some to raise money for other needs of the family."

Jumwa
received a $517 second payment.
"Living in a semi-permanent house is something I did not expect to have by now. This is because I had a low income from casual work which could not even raise enough money to meet our daily needs. I had desired to build a better, spacious and iron-roofed house for the past two years and until I received my transfers, I did not have any savings to buy materials. When I received my transfer, I knew God had answered my prayers hence I used the money to buy building materials for putting up a semi-permanent house."

Alice
received a $22 twenty-fifth payment.
"In the next six months, I am positive that with the boost of the fish stock I will be moving more fish and making more profits. Besides that, I am hoping to have taken baby steps through the purchase of a few livestock towards livestock keeping as a major project soon."
