"Being a widow, I have the responsibility of raising my 5 children single handedly. This means I have to go beyond my means and I burn charcoal to make a living. The much I get is around 3000 shillings a month, an amount that is supposed to cater for all our needs. This has resulted to constant suffering and getting food and school fees is such a struggle. Due to this, I consider financial constraint as my biggest hardship."

"Financial instability is my biggest hardship. This is because my husband lost his herding job when schools closed due to COVID-19. My daughter who could have been of help, lost her job as a house help too after the pandemic. My health situation does not allow me to engage in any casual labour because of the constant chest pains. My husband now relys on charcoal burning business to feed a family of 8. The much he gets is around 2000 shillings a month an amount that is not sufficient."

"Receiving this money means that our economic status will be boosted. We have been depending on subsistence farming where we grow Maize in our one acre piece of land. Nearly all the produce from this has been assisting us to cater for school fees hence we have been struggling to cater for our basic needs. This transfer will assist us to purchase a cow from which we will be able to get milk to sell and get an income."

"The biggest hardship we have faced in life is lack of money to build a decent and spacious house. Currently we are living in a small grass thatched house and when we receive visitors, the house is hardly enough to accommodate even two more people forcing us to seek accommodation elsewhere. This has lowered our self esteem as a family."

"When I was diagnosed with low blood pressure in the year 2029, I felt that my life was becoming more challenging since I normally handle manual farming practices that depend require a strong, healthy and energetic body. From then on, I have drastically reduced the amount of work that I do, meaning that gains from my farming have also declined. Hence, suffering from low blood pressure serves as the biggest hardship I have faced in life."

"My ambition has always been to own a cow which will cost me approximately 300 USD. I will use the produce (milk) from the cow for domestic consumption and sell the surplus in a nearby market.
Previously two of her going children have dropped out of school due to lack of school fees. At the moment I have 3 who are currently in various Schools, 1 in Primary level, 1 in Secondary and the other one in college. Therefore, my aspiration has always to give them the best education as a parent."

"Receiving this money means that my dream of rearing sheep for commercial purposes will materialize. The little profit that I normally realize from my small business of selling second-hand clothes is barely enough for our basic needs. As such, GiveDirectly is God-sent because I have been praying and asking God to help me start the project. I will rear sheep for meat."

"Its been tough raising money to live a descent life. We solely depend on subsistence farming which is so unreliable as a result of the unpredictable weather patterns here. For about a year now, I have had to survive in a house with a leaking roof. Simply because I am unable to replace 3 iron sheets."
