"I have been leading a lonely and boring life since my wife and 3 children left me over 5 years ago. She colluded with my mother in-law and decided to leave me alone; with no companion or helper. As such, receiving this money will mark the end of the loneliness since I will marry another wife and hopefully get other children. Precisely, I will utilize the money on buying more cattle that will be used as dowry when as I marry another wife. In our community, it is an abomination for man to marry without paying dowry. Overall, I will be much grateful to GiveDirectly for empowering me to have another family."

"Failure to pursue my studies beyond Grade 7 acts as the biggest hardship I have faced in life. Currently, I am handling tedious casual tasks in a nearby school yet remunerations is too little. This is because I cannot secure other well-paying and non-menial jobs. As a result, we are leading a substandard lifestyle as a family because we have inadequate income."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in life is educating my three children yet I had no reliable source of income nor adequate resources. As subsistence farmers, we usually attain food items that could just sustain us. Hence, raising school fees has been a challenge. In that regard, we were forced to sell 10 out of the 11 cattle we had to educate our children. Such a move has left us more vulnerable since we have no more cattle to sell in case of an emergency. To worsen the situation, none of the educated children has gained any significant resources, meaning they still rely on us for their survival."

"I bought some of the building materials for constructing a house with the second transfer but they were not enough. When I received the second transfer I purchased more building materials and paid for the construction labour. Thanks to the Give Directly transfers, I am not rained on anymore. I can currently afford a peaceful sleep despite the current heavy rains."

"In my opinion, Give Directly does well by giving people cash and let them decide on how to spend the money. This has enabled people to achieve most of the things they could not afford. On the other hand they do not do anything wrong, all they do is good and helpful."

"For the last one decade, I have been a motorcycle taxi rider and through this business I have been able to meet my daily needs and save some. As at early this year, I had saved a total of KES 200000 which was just slightly below my target for investing. When I received my second transfers, I put together with the savings which I had made from taxi business and spent the whole amount on buying stock for my new shop at a nearby shopping center. I opted to venture into retail business so that I would have a reliable source of income. Again, I saw it was the best time for me to take a rest from operating a motorcycle taxi since it's a health risk business. Prolonged service would expose one to diseases like pneumonia."

"GiveDirectly is touching lives through cash transfers, people have been empowered to have that which they have been yearning for without success due to financial constraints. I like the fact that GiveDirectly is corruption free. There was nothing which wasn't rigth about GiveDirectly, the process was so open and everyone would easily understand."

"Before GiveDirectly came, I was not having a cow and I have been spending alot on buying milk for use at home. Now, this is about to end as the cow which I bought is about to calf down soon and we shall be having milk. I also got seventeen sheep which I couldn't afford to buy on my own. I am so proud to see all these which is as a result of the transfers. I believe that I will be getting good profit after selling them in the next few months."

"My life has changed in two ways, one is about a house which I managed to construct with my first transfers and secondly, about the livestock which I now own as a result of the transfers received. Before, we were living in two small houses which were too squeeze for us to live in. But I am glad that now we have a two roomed house which is more spacious. Again, I am so proud that every day I woke up and go out to look after my livestock. I thank GiveDirectly for changing my life as I couldn't afford all these as I use to struggle with casual jobs so as to meet my family basic needs."

"The biggest hardship we always face is shortage of food. We never harvest enough from our small garden and with all these children, we end up without food after few months."
