"Receiving this money will help me to buy fertilizers for the next growing season so that I harvest enough food stock for the next growing season. I will also use the money for purchasing mattresses and food stuff for the house"

"Working as a charcoal vendor and the only breadwinner in my family has not been easy. This job is tedious and earns me 2400 Kenya shillings in a month which is not enough to cater for all our needs such as shelter. Therefore lack of a good source of income is my biggest challenge."

"I lost my husband due to a road accident 15 years ago. Being a widow at such an early age was the most challenging experience in my life because I have gone through difficulties that I can't imagine. With my 4 children all in school, I am forced to work as a housemaid to earn a monthly payment of $40. This income is very low and it can not fully cater to our needs. Consequently, my children are sent out of school more frequently something that has affected their performance negatively. Hence, financial instability becomes the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life."

"Having a heifer that is almost calving down has been a dream come true for me. It has been a wish for a long time though it was never possible since saving up to 30000KES when other bills were piling up had never been possible. I am grateful that GiveDirectly came and made it possible for us to finally obtain a heifer which would not have been possible if O had never received the transfer."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in life is a lack of money to cater to my family. We separated from my wife last year because of the inadequacy of funds. Something that has led to the low esteem in life. My intention now is to spend my transfer to meet my sister's education expenses first then use what remains to bring back my wife. I work as a casual laborer in the village working on other people's farms. On a good day, I go home with approximately Ksh 300 on average. This money is not enough to cater to a family of two and meet the education expenses of my school-going sister."

"I utilized 340 USD of my second transfer on purchasing a cow for rearing to provide us with milk for consumption and sale of any surpluses. This is because we have been spending at least 0.3 USD daily on purchasing milk for consumption by my family. Having a dairy cow is an invaluable investment in my area. Also, I improved our kitchen using 150 USD by installing an iron-sheet roof to replace the initially grass-thatched one. I did that to ensure we have a more decent kitchen. Further, we bought some clothes for each family member using the remaining amount (about 40 USD). We bought the clothing because the ones we had were relatively insufficient and torn."

"I was much relieved of the stresses and struggles of fending for my family after receiving the transfer. Before then, I was worried about how to sustain my family, ensuring that we educate our children while making some developmental projects. The dramatic reduction in demand for the goods I offer in my quarrying occupation made it hard for me to adequately fend for my family as the main breadwinner. Thank you GiveDirectly for coming to our reacue in time."
