"I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly to purchase a heifer. I will get enough milk when it reproduces in the future. I also purchased pipes and connected tap water. This has enabled me to get clean water for domestic use. I also bought households items which include cooking gas. Finally, I renovated my house to look decent. I am so much grateful for the support because it has changed my living standard."

Benard
received a $504 initial payment.
"I spent my transfer on purchasing a Motorcycle. I had some small savings which I top up with the transfer. I was able to purchase it for 550 dollars. I used to work in a hotel but due to Covid the hotel was closed, I was jobless and I went back home to do casual jobs and small-scale farming. There was no source of income and providing for my family was so hard. I could struggle so much and this was so demoralizing. when I got the first transfer I purchased a motorcycle and currently, I do a taxi business. I earn a daily income of 4 dollars. I do meet the daily needs of my family and some money for other purposes."

Joyce
received a $504 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I have two other dairy cows and this has been my source of income. We depend on small scale farming and the harvest that we get is only for consumption. Sometimes we do casual jobs in the village, The amount of money that we get through this is so small and cannot meet all the basic needs of the family including paying school fees for my children. When I received the transfer, we agreed with my spouse to buy one dairy cow. Currently we have enough milk for consumption and we sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to pay the school fees for our children in various schools. Our children are no longer sent home to collect the school fees and this has improved their performance compared to the previous terms. We have also devoted much of our time on dairy farming project. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us to own dairy cow and be in a position to live a better life."

"I was employed as a charcoal seller for a certain business man in Mombasa and I worked for 8 years doing this job . I built this house from the monthly salary I was paid from this job. The government closed all charcoal businesses due to deforestation brought by charcoal burning. I had not saved anything because I was building my house so that I can have a good house and later marry and have a family .I left the job without any savings. This is the hardest part of my life I faced."

"Food insecurity is the biggest hardship I have ever faced. This place is very dry. The last time I harvested maize in my farm was in the last three years. This makes life to be very expensive. Purchasing foodstuffs is very expensive for me."

Caren
received a $504 initial payment.
"Happiness was all over the village at the moment I received the transfer. I was already out to my usual workplace where I had been doing my casual work when I confirmed the receipt of the transfer on my phone. I had to reconfirm the account balance as I initially thought it was just the usual prank messages I had been receiving. To my happiness, I had received as was promised. I thanked God and tried my best to work through that day on the farm that even though it was hard holding back the celebrations until I was done, I had to keep the focus on the piece that I was yet to complete."
