"My life is currently different from how it was in that I managed to buy a second-hand motorcycle that my husband operates which has given us a reliable source of income. Today, we can comfortably meet our daily needs without doing casual jobs. Although the business has its challenges a day can not pass without earning some money. This helps us to plan our life with the little that we have. Previously, making plans was hard because my husband and I could depend on casual jobs which were unreliable in most cases."

"In the next six months, I want to boost my sardines business and make it a hotel business. I know with this, I will have a stable source of income to sustain my family needs. I would not want to go back to casual work again. Through this, I will always pay school fees for my children promptly."

"In the next six months, I want to buy a solar system. It is costly to buy keresone on a daily basis since I only depend on casual work which is not giving much. The income cannot sustain all my familyt needs hence I want to buy solar so that I can use the money on buying kerosene on other family needs."

"Had I not received the transfer from GiveDirectly, I would not have bought the cow and chicken that I am now keeping. This would mean that I would always be reminded of the pain of losing my family members and the effect that It had on us including using up most resources. So having the livestock keeps me busy and this helps me with the road towards recovery for me and family. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for holding my hand in this journey. I have now fenced my compound well with a chain link and I can now focus on livestock keeping. This will be a good source of income for my family."

"Lack of a sustainable source of income has resulted in my husband spending most of his time in the forest burning charcoal, leaving me alone to care for the children at home. The little income he earns is dismal and in most cases cannot meet the needs of the family. We struggle a lot to keep the children in school leave alone the privilege of having a three meal a day. Receiving this money will bring him closer to the family and will no longer experience cold and lonely nights. Besides, he will assist me in rearing the goats, an area he is good in."

"In the next six months, I expect my life to change in a positive way. I will have a water tank and we plan to save more money that will enable us buy land. The water tank shall be bought when we get our merry go round contributions and this will bring to an end the perennial problem of water shortage. We are going to commit my husbands pay slip and borrow a loan that will enable us buy land. The land that we are currently staying in is a family land and is already too small to allow us make any reasonable investments in it. Getting our own land shall definitely be a breakthrough for us as a family as it will open us to more opportunities of investment."

"For the past one and half years, I had been operating a very successful poultry business. The task of taking care of my children's needs was very easy despite my husband's meagre income. However, around late last year, there was an outbreak of the bird flu virus in our village and it ended up killing over forty of my hens because I did not have enough money to purchase the vaccines on time. This greatly affected my business thus leading to its collapse. All my efforts to revive it have proven futile because most of the time I spend the little that my husband sends me to buy food for my children. With this money,I plan to construct a chicken pen, stock more poultry and save some amount for buying vaccines so that I can start my poultry business again. I will also purchase a pair of oxen and an ox plough to expand my farming so that my family gets to be food secure all season through."

"Ever since we started burning charcoal and selling in order to get our income, our lives managed to improve a bit. However, our good days of living were short lived. Around early last year when the government placed a ban on the burning of charcoal, our source of income was greatly affected when buyers reduced significantly. We work so hard to get the product ready but there are no buyers. Our finances have greatly dwindled and affording necessary commodities around the household are proving to be too difficult by each passing day that the ban continues to exist. Farming that used to supplement for the tough times whenever we ploughed our farms has also been greatly affected by the ongoing drought. I feel like I am trapped in a financial crisis that I do not know how to escape from and I can only pray for the ban to be lifted."

"The greatest difference in my life since Give Directly came into my life is that I can easily plan my life and be sure my plans will come to pass. Since I now have a reliable source of income, I decided to buy two sheep that gave birth recently. I believe they will continue to multiply with time. I will be selling the offsprings when my budget is overstretched. This will help to avoid taking loans more often. I no longer depend on casual in order to buy food and other basics. I thank Give Directly for thinking of providing unconditional cash transfers."
