"Life has not been easy for me since I divorced my husband back in 2013 due to domestic problems. Since then, I have always been struggling to raise my children alone with little or no resources. Currently, my biggest worry is that I have a daughter who has recently joined secondary school. I don't know if I will be able to educate her through to form four because I don't have enough resources to cater for her fees and also her other siblings' education as well."

"I spent KES 1500 of my transfer on paying school fees for my child. I cleared her arrears so that she would be allowed to continue with her studies. In addition to this, I also spent a portion of the transfer on boosting my poultry project. I bought some chicken feeds and other equipment to run my project effectively. I spent the remaining amount to cater for my household basic needs like food and other expenses."

"Financial constraint is my biggest hardship in life. Because I was not educated, getting a job in the formal sector was impossible. This forced me to become a palm wine tapper from my younger years, almost 30 years ago as we had planted many coconut trees in our compound. As am getting older now, my body is becoming weaker by the day and my work is too labour intensive as it involves alot of physical activity such as climbing etc. Lately, I have been wanting to quit but I still do not have an alternative source of income because I lack the finances to put my ideas into reality. This has really stressed me out. "

"Farming is a major source of food and income in my community. When we are faced with prolonged drought every year, crops wither and water pans dry up. Sometimes, livestock perish too. When this happen, we are forced to sell remaining animals for throwaway prices for survival. This is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life. "

"Most people in my community depend on stagnant water pans for their domestic purposes like livestock and household chores. When they dry up during drought, we are forced to hire motorcycles to go for water in distant rivers. This is often costly when there is no alternative source of income. "

"A good house for my children means a lot to me. Currently, my household has ten members but all my children spend their nights to my neighbor's house something that makes me feel ashamed. Considering my security job which pays me at most five thousand shillings per month, I have never been able to construct a structure for them because of the many responsibilities I have for the family. When I receive my transfers from GiveDirectly, my plan is to build a nice house for my children and this will restore my happiness that I have longed for. In addition to this, I will spend the other transfer on buying livestock especially goats for rearing. This will change my livelihood for the better, a transition that I have wished in my life. Therefore, this is basically what receiving this money means to me."
