"My piece of land often floods during heavy rains. As such,I cannot plant anything on it and this makes my family prone to hunger.Farming is the main economic activity in this area and without a place to farm, life is very difficult.I am therefore forced to put in extra effort in my motorbike taxi work so that we can have enough to eat as well as meet all the other needs that my household has. This is the biggest hardship I have faced"

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is the inability to satisfy basic needs for my family.I have five children of my own and one orphan whom I taking care of.The small piece of land we have floods during the rainy season. This means that we get very little or no harvest at all.Financial constraints forced my husband to go the neighbouring county to work as a casual labourer. However what he gets is still not enough to satisfy the basic needs and pay school fees.I also depend on casual labour here at home which is not guaranteed."

"Receiving this money will enable me to furnish my house which is in bad shape due to the heavy rainfall that has washed away the paint. I plan to paint the outside part of the house as well as cementing the floor as well as replacing the old iron sheet that leaks whenever it rains. I will then use the remaining part of the money to add two dairy cattle to my herd to boost my income."

"In the next six months, I would wish to complete the payment of the water tank which I obtained on a hire purchase terms. I have been paying a total sum of 2000 KES every month which I am to pay over a period of five months. The total cost of the tank was 20000 KES. I found the deal good since I am already enjoying the use of the tank even though I have not completed its payment. I also aspire to purchase a cow since in the next six months since I have been saving for. I have been hoping to accumulate my savings to around 20000 KES so that I can obtain a mature breed of a cow. All this will be possible since we joined hands with my husband and every month's savings is 4000KES."

"Surviving on selling the local coconut brew is what I have known for three months now after abandoning my work of extracting hard core stones which I found to be more dangerous to my health. Being a lady and doing these kind of business is what I feel shameful to myself but because I have no any support from my husband, I am forced to do them in order to provide food, clothing and education to my children. Therefore, I consider lack of reliable source of income as my biggest hardship."

"I woke up one day with an ultimatum from my spouse to either quit my teaching job at a local primary school or pack my things and leave. He also discouraged me from joining college where I wanted to expand my knowledge and skills in Early Childhood Education. I chose to keep my marriage and I'm now forced to stay home to just care for the children and my ailing mother in law. It's very hard for me because now I solely depend on my spouse's unreliable income from his casual job in Mombasa town to cater for all our needs. As a result, construction of our house and toilet is stalled and our four children are consistently sent home due to fee balances. "

"I expect to have plastered my house in the next six months. I have already started saving money towards this project and I believe I will have accumulated enough money to buy the necessary materials. I always feel embarrassed because I am the only one with a mud floor. Most of my friends have plastered floors and I always feel the odd one out. The joy of every woman is to have a house they can mop every morning. I can't wait to have mine plastered and mop-like my fellow women."

"There are changes that are going to take place in my life because for one I will be able to pay my casual workers in a timely manner which of course will be a big motivation for them. Once they get their pay without delays, they will definitely do a good job on the farm, which will eventually translate to a good harvest at the end of the season. Once we have a good harvest, most of our problem will be solved because in the event that I run out of money, then I can easily sell out part of my stock in exchange for money."
