"As a window and the sole breadwinner for my family, I have faced the challenge of providing our basic needs say; housing, school fees, better clothing, and even daily meals. I once worked as a maid but due to its low income, I found it wasting much of my time yet meeting the needs was difficult. I decided to return home and opt for charcoal burning as the only hope for me. With my much struggle, I am still challenged due to the laborious nature of this job. Therefore, I consider the lack of a sensible source of income as my biggest hardship."

"I am a happy person today to learn that my family's life will soon change once I receive the cash grant from GiveDirectly. As of now, I live a life of misery because despite my husband having been diagnosed with Tuberculosis since June 2019, we have never managed to have a decent room for his stay. We are forced to sleep in the same room which is at the same time used as a kitchen, something that is very risky to a patient like him. My plan is to use at least $100 to extend one room for him that can provide a comfort zone for his living in order to manage his illness with much easy. On the other hand, I intend to invest in livestock keeping which will be my long term project to help the family in the future. I will use utmost $300 to buy 10 goats and another $300 to buy an oxen to help in upscaling my farming."

Since I can no longer work, I depend solely on my offspring for my survival which I feel is a burden to them because they too have their own families now."

"My husband left me with eight children that I had to raise single handedly. Since then my job has been burning charcoal and the much I get is 1000 shillings a month. This situation made it difficult to educate them and only one managed to complete primary education. This forced my daughters to get married at a tender age because life was very difficult at home. My sons are working as casual labourers and they are suffering too. I feel like I failed as a parent but there is nothing I could do about it. All this resulted from lack of from support my spouse."
