"I have been dreaming of how best I can secure my family's future and I have come to believe livestock keeping is my best choice. We have a large piece of land that can allow me to graze a herd of cattle peacefully. To me receiving this money means I will live my dream life since I will have achieved my goal of securing my family future through investing part of my transfer on livestock. I will have milk for both household use and sales for an extra income. I will also have offspring that will always be my financial security."

"Raising my children single-handedly after separating from my husband is something that has never been easy for me, and this forced me to seek refuge from my sister's house since I could not afford to rent or own a shelter. With the hard economic activities in our area and charcoal burning being the most dominant one, I opted to venture into it and luckily, I got a small capital to start my small business of selling take-away foodstuffs. I have ever wished to expand this business but it has always been impossible due to inadequate income, and therefore, I consider financial instability as the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life."

"As a family we primarily depend on subsistence farming to meet our both daily and future goals. In our home area, hiring man power and farm machinery is so expensive. This so demoralizing and straining for small scale farmers like me. To me receiving this money means a steady income and better farm produce. I am planning to invest part of it to buy oxen that will greatly help me in my farm and also will hire out to source in an extra income."

"Receiving this money means a lot to me and my family. We have been desiring to purchase a dairy cow of our own. My source of income is from the casual jobs I do and it's not enough to sustain my family's basic needs hence I have not managed to purchase one. Our father has been providing us milk since he has two dairy cows. Sometimes it's not enough because my brothers also depend on this. Though this milk could have been his source of income, he gives it to us for free. I have been seeing as if we are now becoming a burden to him. In case we receive this transfer we will purchase a dairy cow for 20,000 shillings. For the remaining amount, we will pay school fees and pipe water into our compound."

"Receiving this money means my desire of owning livestock will come true. I will be able to venture into livestock farming whereby I will use 60,000 Kenya shillings to buy 2 cows and 10 goats. The cows will provide milk which I will sell and get income. The goats will also provide first-hand finance to assist in any of my financial needs. I also intend to expand my one-roomed house into a three-roomed house by using 30,000 Kenya shillings to expand the house so that it can be spacious enough for my family."

I will also use 30,000 Kenya shillings to buy 10 goats which I will sell to support in any financial needs when they multiply. "The size of the land that I currently own is so small. I had to subdivide it into three portions; one for the house and compound, the other for cultivation and the last portion as grazing field for my cattle. Due to the small nature of the portions, the produce that I get from the farm I cultivate is hardly enough to sustain my family throughout the year. This therefore means I have to dig deep by doing some casual jobs on people's farm so as to curb the deficit. This for me is the biggest hardship I have ever faced in life."

"Owning livestock that I never had before the coming of GiveDirectly makes the biggest difference in my daily life. These are assets that will help me in raising fees for my children. Planning for the future of our children's education has not been easy. The little income from menial jobs might not be enough to cater for this. I resolved to purchase the livestock to keep as part of the plan to ensure that the future of my children's education is secured."

"I am a casual laborer and that's what I do to get money to feed my family. My wife is a small-scale trader who buys and sells vegetables in the village for a small profit. Receiving this money would mean that we focus all our energy on producing vegetables in our farm and since my wife is already an experienced trader she'll be able to sell these vegetables and make more profit."
