"I work as a waitress in a small food vending room at our nearby trading center. The much I can earn per day is 150 KES and this cannot sustain us. I have desired to start vending food to have a reliable source of income but due to lack of capital, this has never been possible. With the cash grant, I am now optimistic about realizing my dream since I intend to spend 20000 KES to realize my ambition. This will assure me of a good profit since I am already known by my customers. On the other hand, I will spend the remaining amount to construct a decent iron sheets roofed house that will accommodate us. Hence, this is generally what receiving this money means to me."

"Financial constraints has been my biggest hardship. I have previously depended on farming for a living but due to the harsh climate, the farm has not been productive. I am left to depend on the income I earn from the casual laborer and this is not sufficient to educate my children and to cater for the household at large."

"I struggle alot to find food since I do not have a stable source of income as I rely on casual labour which does not even fetch enough money to allow me feed and provide for as the pay normally ranges between $3-5 per labour which is not enough"

"I am the breadwinner of the family since I am married to a vulnerable (disabled). This has made my life challenging since what I earn from my casual job (weeding) is not sufficient to help me buy food, build a decent home and implement my developmental plans, this money has given me hope. With this money, I will budget KES 40000 to build an iron sheet house for my family. I don't have a cow making me buy milk daily for the family, I will consider also buying a cow with KES 30000 to help us produce milk which will help us use it for domestic and sell the surplus to earn income. With KES 20000 I will buy food and clothing for the family and the remaining KES 10000 I will use to pay school fees for my children"

"My main house has stalled since what we earn is little and most goes to basic needs and buying food for the family, this makes it hard for me to complete this house. With this money, I will use KES 50000 to complete the construction of my house. Milk is in high demand and paying in our area, this makes me develop an interest in dairy farming to enable me to earn more income. I will therefore set KES 40000 to buy a cow and start my dream of venture into a dairy farm. With the remaining KES 10000, I will buy food and other basic needs for my family like clothing."

"The biggest hardship that I have faced in my life is the fact that I look after 4 grandchildren who are orphans which is difficult for me because I depend on casual labour. This is also difficult because my husband also died last year leaving me alone to help these children as old as I am so it is hard especially in terms of food, I do not cultivate enough to feed them all."

"I had no enough food and my family was facing acute food shortage because i harvested very little due to lack of inputs, but now with this transfer i have managed to buy enough food that will cover my family for a longer time period. In addition to that my family used to dress in poor and torn clothes due to poverty and i had no sustainable source of money that would help me to alleviate the problem, today things have changed with money received from Givedirectly because i have bought new clothes for the whole family and now we are living a happy life"

"I am the last born in a family of seven. I have two brothers whom we live with in the same compound. We did not get along with their wives and I had to build a structure so that I can move away from home. Receiving this money, I intend to expand my house with KES 30000 of the transfer because the one I am in is small. I will also buy a cow with KES 30000 of the transfer to buy a cow that will provide my two children and I milk and the rest use to clear my school fees."
