"I spent KES 38000 to support my children's education by paying the fee arrears in secondary school. They completed their secondary last year but it was impossible to get their certificates because of the fees arrears. Currently, one of them joined the Kaguma teachers college pursuing a mathematics and IT course. In addition, I purchased a bed and mattress for KES 5,500 since I was using a traditional bed and sacks which was not comfortable. I also bought 2 goats for KES 6,000 a reliable source of income that will help me in any financial emergency that might arise. The remaining amount assisted me in acquiring sufficient food for the family."

"I spent KES 12000 to purchase one lorry of building stone and cement. This was for renovating my house since it was collapsing something very risky to my family members. I constructed pillars to the house to strengthen it so that it was more permanent. I also spent 17,000 to purchase a bed and mattress this is because I was using a traditional bed and sacks as bedding which was uncomfortable to sleep on. I also purchase a sack of maize and 2 bundles of flour which is enough food for a whole month for my family. Lastly, I bought 3 plastic chairs for KES 1800, before I was using logs as chairs it was embarrassing especially when I received important guests in my house."

"It is almost 2 years now, I am not able to work well due to my knees problem. I can not stand or walk for more than an hour. Being a peasant farmer, I have desired to purchase oxen and ox-plough to assist me in preparing my farm but I lacked the financial capacity. After receiving my transfer, I spent KES 25,000 to purchase an ox and ox-plough. Earlier, I was using hand and hoe to till my farm which was very tedious and characterized by a poor harvest. I also purchase a mattress for KES 3000, the mat that I was using was not comfortable and prone to bedbugs. I also purchased 24 iron sheets at KES 700 each, nails and set aside KES 3500 for labor charges. This was for renovating my house which was leaking due to the old rusty iron sheets. The remaining amount assisted me in acquiring sufficient food for the families."

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying twenty pieces of iron sheets at a total of KES 17400, building poles KES 6000, nails, and timber. This was for the construction of a new house to at least make a change on the previous one which was very small and had a temporary roof. Some of my children ( four) had to seek shelter from their friends' houses which were relatively far from the village and I was always worried. In addition to that, I gave the mason KES 5000 as his labor fee. Also, I bought a second had a bicycle at KES 4000, which is now of great help in transporting water from the dam which is 7KM away from the village. I also bought a mattress worth 4000 for my spouse who is very old and sick. He is now very happy since he sleeps comfortably and no longer complains of the backpains. I later paid a school fees KES 2000, for my two children who are in primary schools. With the amount of money that had remained, I bought foodstuffs."

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying a new wooden bed at KES 6250 and a mattress worthy of KES 4000. These were to replace the old rags that I have been using for years as beddings. I also bought a water tank of 2400litres at KES 1700, and I am happy I now have a place to store the rainwater that I will be harvesting in the next winter season. In addition, I bought twenty pieces of iron sheets, building poles, nails, and timber KES 23000. This was for the construction of a new house because the initial one was a small hut with a grass-thatched roof that could leak excessively whenever it could rain. Also, it was very small and it could not accommodate my five family members. With there remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family."

I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our lives."

"I can still recall just like the other day when my daughter who is also my helper came into my room and informed me about the good news that GiveDirectly had sent my first transfer into my Mpesa account. At first, I thought it was a prank but after checking the phone, I confirmed that it was real. I felt so happy because I knew there are hopes of living a better life. I also had hopes of finally going to the hospital and getting proper medication since I have been unwell for quite some time."
