"The challenges I am currently going through include inadequate income and inadequate land for farming. I do not have enough space on the land I currently have to produce more crops. The crops would have even earned us an income. I however believe that with GiveDirectly's transfers the challenges will be something of the past."

"Receiving this money means a stable source of income to me. I have never owned a cow and I have been buying milk for more than 10 years now. I buy 1 litre of milk at KES 60 per day which is quite expensive. I am employed under casual terms earning KES 200 which I spend all of it to buy food for my family of 9. My husband is sickly and cannot work hence I am the sole breadwinner. I plan on buying a cow with KES 35,000 that can give me five litres of milk per day and 3 goats at KES 7500. This is will be a reliable source of income. The rest I will use to buy other basic needs such as clothes and food, and build a good shelter for my two sons."

"Lack of enough food is the main challenge. We buy food for most of the year as the much we produce can not sustain us year-long costing us up to KES 4000 a month for maize flour alone. My husband is a casual laborer- a tea plucker at a tea plantation far from home. He is the sole provider to our family so we depend on him to send us money for upkeep. The much he earns( approximately KES 6000 a month) is usually not enough as he has to meet his needs including food and rent as well as support us."

"I recently completed my Secondary school education. This makes it difficult for me to find a job and support my husband in providing for the family. This is making me struggle financially and depend on my husband who is the sole breadwinner."

"I spent KES 42000 from my first transfer to build a more decent house for my house made with timber walls and KES 13000 on three three-seater seats, food, and clothes. I settled on building this house since I am planning on using my next transfer to cement the floor. The floors and the walls of the house I currently live in are made of mud and with my age, I usually depend on other people to help me in cleaning it."

"Upon receiving my transfer, I spent KES 40000 from it to build a room for business since I am planning to use my next transfer to buy a posho mill machine after topping up some amount. This has always been my dream business and I am glad that I am about to actualize it. Using the remaining KES 14000, I purchased some food items and clothes for my family."

"Since my husband who works as a casual labourer in a tea farm in Kericho barely makes enough income for the household, I'm forced to do farming on our barren piece of land and milk from our one cow. We are currently experiencing drought and so the only cow I depend on for food and as a source of income has not been helpful. There is no grass fed r the cow and so the milk production has been very low. I now only use the two cups of milk in my household for tea and I can not sell it to make an income for the household."

"When my husband had an accident in 2019 and fell from an electric pole he could not walk and this meant we had to depend on subsistence farming from our shared piece of land. His medical bill is still not fully paid and each month we get called by the hospital reminding us to pay any amount so as not to accumulate the bill longer."

"Having a decent place to lay my head has been a challenge through out my life. I have always long to live in a better place. For each time raining season is approaching, my whole heart can be worried, because of the condition of my house. Thank God for Give Directly, I will now have my own decent place, and raining season will no longer be a worry for my family and I."

"I woke up one morning and heard my neighbors rejoicing, everyone knows that only one thing that make us happy which is GD transfer so it certainly down on me that it was the transfer that has been sent. I wasn't really happy because my first money was stolen by an agent so I thought it would have been the same case. However there was still a little hope, when I checked my phone I saw mine, I only smiled a bit."
