"I spent KES 25000 of my recent transfer to complete the payment for a piece of land that I had bought before. I had bought three points of an acre with some of my savings but I had not completed making the payment. I decided to buy the land because the one that I have is small and not enough to do farming. I am still planning on whether the piece of land that I bought is going to be purely for farming or I can move there with my family. I used the remaining amount on paying for my college fees and on paying the school fees arrears that I was still owing my former secondary school. I was still in college and I had lacked money for paying for my fees. My secondary school certificate had also been withheld at my school because I had not cleared the arrears that I was still owing them. I wanted to finish college and to pay for the arrears so that I could get my certificates. I wanted to apply for a job opening at GiveDirectly. I am glad that I got the certificates and I was able to do so. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your support."

"Our new goal is to buy another cow to add to the one we bought with the transfer from GiveDirectly. We also want to till the land that we have so that we can plant some nappier grass. We use to buy milk before we bought the cow, where we use to buy two litres a day and we could pay KES 1800 at the end of the month. The cow that we bought has calved. We want to add another cow so that we can always have a constant supply of milk, that is, when one cow is dry, we can still milk another one. This way we will not incur costs of buying milk anymore and the production will be increased. We can sell some of the milk and use the money to pay school fees for our children. We also want to plant the nappier grass so that it can act as feeds for our cows since they are drought resistant. The cows will have something to feed on during those seasons."

"My biggest challenge is getting enough food for the household. I need to step out every day hustling through making ropes and selling vegetables. This means that any single day that I do not sell is a day that we sleep hungry. From my struggles, I make about KES 300 a day barely enough for food."

"Receiving this money means that I will buy a dairy cow to acquire a source of income. Selling milk will give me about KES 120 per day. This will enable me to meet my daily household needs like food and personal care items. I also hope to start a new business, selling maize in a nearby market. This will further generate income as I will make a profit of about KES 3600 per week."

"It was around 6.30 pm while on my way to the posho mill when I heard an SMS alert on my phone. On checking, I confirmed to have received KES55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy and bought beef on my way back home. That night we celebrated GiveDirectly transfers by eating a special diet of Ugali and beef the most prestigious meal that we couldn't otherwise afford."

"Financial struggles have really weighed me down. This has been made worse by the current job ( charcoal work) that I am doing. The little amount I get from my charcoal business is not enough to cater to all our needs."
