How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do have a new goal since building a house was one of my main concern. I had always wished to complete the construction and that was where I spent better part of the second transfer. I am so happy because I have fulfilled it and now live in a better house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community without any discrimination. Most of the people received the transfer and spent it well. Building of better houses and starting businesses. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 40,000 on completing the construction of my new house that I started using my savings. I used the money to buy tiles and ceiling. The construction had stop at some point since I had exhausted my savings. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I decided to complete the remaining parts and now I live in a better and decent which is free from dust. I spent KES 3.000 on purchasing one sack of maize. The rest of the money I spent on mattresses, bed and clothes for my children. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards to be much better.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was about 9.00 a.m and I was feeding livestock in our church compound when I received a message confirming receipt of my first transfer. I was so excited upon reading it and immediately began praying to thank God for the blessings that had just come in and as a way of giving glory to God, I promised myself that I would use part of it to support the construction of our church.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have a cow that I call my own. This is because I was given the one I have by my son and I believe that God will bless it and it will continue increasing in number. I will be using income from the sale of surplus to meet our basic needs and save part of it when it calves.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the money that I received from GiveDirectly to buy a dairy cow. This is an investment that will enable me to earn extra income through the sale of milk when it calves. In addition, I spent KES 10000 to support the building of our church as a way of giving thanks to God for leading GiveDirectly my way and used the remaining KES 9000 on food and clothes for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I started building my main house in the year 2019 and up until now, it is still incomplete. I feel ashamed whenever I get visitors because the state at which it is right now is wanting. It needs urgent repairs but I have no money for the same. I plan to have floor and ceiling finishes as soon as I get funds. This will cost approximately KES 40000. Receiving this money will mean so much to me as it will help me actualize my dream of having a decent house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day. This is so because it is at this time that I actively engage in activities that I love the most like feeding my two cows and doing some weeding on my farm.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The sudden demise of my husband is the biggest hardship I have faced. He started feeling unwell in May 2015 and he died in August the same year. I took him to several hospitals in a bid to save his life but all was in vain. He left us a huge bill of KES 150000 which we could not raise even after having a village fundraising and this forced me to sell 2cow to top up the balance.
