"My biggest concern now is how am going to educate and feed my nine children. Currently, I struggle a lot to put food in the table given that our stores are dry and my husband who works in Mombasa hardly provide for the family. For my two children who are in secondary school, I have not paid even a single cent since the year began. Teachers have branded me a liar and in most cases, they stay out of school. This is something that I need to change once I get my transfers. To achieve, I will start a hotel business at the nearby shopping center. And having owned a hotel before, I understand the tricks and risks that come with it. This is where I will invest a huge part of my transfer in. Secondly, I will pay part of arrears that have accrued in school. I want these transfers to be part of my children stories in their educational growth."

"I did not have a reliable source of income yet I have two children one in the university and the other in secondary school. It was not easy to raise their fee for their education but I'm happy this is not the case anymore. This is because I have been using the recent transfers to pay for their fee and part of for boosting my business. My business is now doing well and the profit margin has increased."

"Being independent and responsible is the biggest achievement I have ever since Give Directly came into my life. I just cleared secondary education a year ago and I didn't have any source of income. I used to rely on my parents for everything but I'm happy this is not the case anymore because through the transfers I get from Give Directly I have been able to meet my needs on my own. I no longer feel like a bother. I feel at peace since I am not obliged to ask for personal items from parents. This is the biggest difference in my daily life."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is having to struggle with education. This began with myself and has now transitioned to my children.I dropped out of school due to lack of school fees.My father passed on when I was in standard three and my mother could not manage paying school fees for all us beyond primary level.I believe that if I had at least completed college I could be in a better position to easily educate my children.Though I am trying my best,it is an uphill task.My husband supports me but it is still not enough since I am the second wife and therefore he has the other family to take care of.My dream is seeing my children complete college, get employed so that their children and the generation to come can also get good education.Education is the key to a bright future which we all want for our children."

"In six months time, I will be having my cow in my compound. My firstborn child will have completed her secondary education and my concentration will be more to the young ones. This will have really eased my work to even be providing for my children better."

"The biggest difference in my daily life in the last four months preceding the current transfer is that I was able to take my child to a good private school where she is able to study well. I used to do casual jobs in the village and the small wages that I got was not enough to enable me to take her to a good school. Her performance was not good initially but it has improved now. I usually combine the small amount I get from the casual jobs with the transfer I receive from GiveDirectly to pay school fees on time. This has resulted in good performance of my child. I am a proud parent who believes that my child's future will be bright because she is getting quality education"

received a $460 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is I have enough farmland to cultivate on. This transfer helped me get back my land which I used as collateral security to secure school fees for my education. Transportation is so easy nowadays compared to the past because I managed to buy bicycle. I ride to long distances within a short period of time unlike before when I used to walk as means of transport."

"It is my wish to be a more active player in my marriage in terms of provision of basic needs such as food, housing and education, also in decision making on matters concerning the family etc. Sadly, this is not the case as I lack the financial capacity to engage in activities that can ensure a flow of income which will ultimately earn me my husband's respect and be able to see me as an equal partner that can also contribute to the welfare of the family. "My aspiration has been to live a decent life like others in the village, but this wish has never come through. This is because, my husband abandoned me three years ago, something that has forced me to be engaged in man dominated businesses like masonry labourer, a job that has subjected me to ridicule. My earnings has never been enough to support my family's basic needs like education, food, clothing and shelter. Receiving this money means enabling me to start a hotel business in order to have a reliable source of income. I also plan to construct a good house for myself because the one I currently live in is not worthy for living. The remaining amount will support my children's education, and this is basically what receiving this money means to me."
