Vicoty
received a $536 initial payment.
"I had been buying milk on a daily basis which is usually costly. I used to spend a lot of money buying a few litres that could not last long. When I received the money from GD, I decided to buy a dairy cow. I spent KES 30000 to buy a lactating cow. Apart from that I also bought some iron sheets and nails which cost me KES 15000 with an intention to complete the house which I had built halfway due to lack of enough finances. In addition to that, I also bought ten chicken. I want to start practising layers of chicken farming because no one is doing that in this village at the moment. This will help me meet and sustain my family's needs easily. I spent the remaining amount to buy utensils and school uniform for my children."

Dorothy
received a $22 twelfth payment.
"I have been buying milk on a daily basis and it is always expensive especially during dry seasons. My family at times are forced to take tea without milk. As a way of minimizing my daily expenses and creating a source of income, I am planning to buy a dairy cow in the next four months. I will use the savings I will be given from our merry go round group to achieve this."

Annah
received a $518 second payment.
"Receiving the transfer from GiveDirectly changed a lot of things in my life. There has been a lot of transformation in the agricultural part of my life where I have improved drastically in both subsistence and livestock farming. Imagining how lives would have been if we had never received the transfers, I can say that it would have been very hard. I would not be having a new house at the moment, buying of milk would still be the routine since I would not be having a cow and also my family members together with me would be depending on the old clothing that we had before since we had no money to buy everyone new clothing at the same time. Thanks to GiveDirectly for considering us as part of the program."

"Firewood come across as an important source of income in my village. I spend most of my days in an adjacent government forest collecting firewood for sale in a nearby shopping center. I usually engage in this otherwise illegal activity so as to provide for my family of three especially to pay for the milk I rent from a neighbor and purchase of other household needs. Upon receiving money from GiveDirectly, I intend to buy a dairy cow which is going to take the role of substitute source of income. This will relieve me of a constant fear of possible prosecution for deforestation. My dairy cow is going to be the beginning of a sustainable development in my family which will play a major role in the education of my children. "

"Receiving this money means i will be able to buy a piece of land that will enable me rear livestock in it since my 0.5 Acre piece of land cant sustain livestock keeping. I will then use the remaining part of my transfer to buy sheep and goats for a start which will enable me to buy a dairy cow upon selling the goats and sheep when they multiply."
