"My life is different in that I was able to build a two roomed iron roofed house. This would have not been possible had I not received the cash transfer because before the cash transfers, I was sleeping in a grass thatched house."

"I spent my second transfer in renovating my already existing house since it was in really in bad shape and needed to be repaired. I then bought some household items. like mattress, utensils and clothes. This is such that I can also stand out among some people. I also built another grass thatched house. This will act as one of the houses that my visitors will sleep and avoid sharing the small space in the iron roofed house."

"I spent part of my first transfer to buy a pair of oxen. Initially, I was hiring from neighbors and because it was costly, I could not meet my target as far as farming was concerned. I was also unable to fully cultivate my farm and the harvest I was getting was only a handful. With the pair, I will now plough my farm early and increase the acreage of my arable land in order to get better yields. I will also hire to my neighbours at a price, which means an income to me. In addition to this, I bought some iron sheets and other building materials to construct a new house since the one I was living was leaking because its roofing was worn out and old and nearly part of it had collapsed, making it difficult for us to shelter in. On the remaining amount, I spent on shopping for my family and also bought food for them."

"The biggest difference is that I now live in a better and more spacious house that does not leak anymore unlike my previous house which had a leaking roof. My children have new school uniforms and they look smart and neat every morning as they attend their school. Before, they had patched uniforms that made them look untidy. Having planted maize, I am expecting a bumper harvest that will provide food security for my family and also generate income from the sales. This will improve our living standards."

"I spent my first transfer to purchase a bed and a mattress. I used to sleep on the floor and this made my back to ache constantly. I also bought sofa sets to replace the jerricans that used to act as my chairs. I bought a cow that was pregnant and now it has given birth to a calf. I can get milk from the cow and no longer have to buy miljk from the shop. I also bought iron sheets to replace my roof that was leaking whenever it rained."

"The biggest difference is that initially, we used to live in a horrible house which used to leak whenever it rained due to the grass-thatched roof and had a mad wall with a wooden door. Thanks to GD we currently live in a better and more spacious house with a steel door and plastered walls. Food in my house is also gurantees for the next couple of months."

Martin received a $527 second payment.
"I used to live in a grass thatched house which leaked during rainy seasons so we would cover our bed with polythene until the rain stops. Had it not been for GiveDirectly's transfers, I would not be having the house I live in at the moment because my source of income was very low that I could not have saved enough to build an iron-roofed house. I have also saved some money which I am planning to use startup rice farming which will generate for me more money."
