I used to live in a grass thatched house which leaked during rainy seasons so we would cover our bed with polythene until the rain stops. Had it not been for GiveDirectly's transfers, I would not be having the house I live in at the moment because my source of income was very low that I could not have saved enough to build an iron-roofed house. I have also saved some money which I am planning to use startup rice farming which will generate for me more money.

I was not comfortable living in a house with no windows and a door because I was worried about the dangers I was exposed to especially at night when it was cold. I saved the rest of the second transfer with an intention of investing it in rice farming which would earn me more money in future.

The biggest difference in my daily life is the pride and happiness I have for having constructed a decent house of my dream that I didn't know I would own any time soon because of the low income that I had. I can now sleep peacefully whenever it rains without waking up my family to shelter in a corner so that they are not rained on.

It was 5:00 am when I had a message notification on my phone and when I checked, it was a message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy, shared the news with the spouse, and she was happy too and the only word she uttered was "all I need is a good house, kindly plan on how to construct it".

I bought building materials (irons sheets, timber, nails, steel windows, and doors) which I have already used to construct a new house because the previous house was a leaking grass thatch that could inconvenience us, especially during the rainy season because all the households could be destroyed by the rain. At night, I had to wake up my family to squeeze in a corner so that we could not be rained on but this is not the case anymore because GD came to my rescue and I have already constructed a new decent house.
