"It felt so good to be able to move my hand without pain. During the seven months, I was not able to move on lift anything. I might have kicked off the year with tragedy but July was a turnaround. I am happy that I can at least hold the steering and ride a motorcycle." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I am living together with my husband Garama and three children. The husband got into a motorcycle accident and broke all his two legs in 2011 at Vitengeni center Kilifi county. Since then he has never recovered well. He cannot work anymore. That made me take the responsibility of feeding the family and also catering to his medical bills. I am a casual laborer earning approximately $ 30 per month. This caters only to food so getting money to take my husband to a specialist for further checkups is a challenge to me."

"I rely on a motorcycle taxi business to support my family of four members. However, I do not own a motorcycle instead, I rent one for $4 daily. That is a lot of money, so I do not generate good money from that business. I can only make $3 on a good day. The taxi business has been low since fuel prices began to rise, so I spend most of my time at home. As a result, I am having difficulty raising school fees for my PP1 daughter, Zawadi. She had fee arrears of $6 when I received my transfer. As a result, I prioritized offsetting her fee, and she has been learning comfortably for the past two months." "I am born into a family of seven children. Our father passed away last year, and he was the breadwinner of the family. My mother is unemployed, and we have been depending on my two brothers. One of them works as a motorcycle rider. It has been a struggle because they have their families, which are their main responsibilities. When I got enrolled in the program, I was excited and couldn’t wait to receive my first transfer. As soon as I received the funds, I used all the $10.6 on food because the previous night we had finished the last packet of maize flour. I was excited to inform my brothers that I took care of the next two days’ meals."

"GiveDirectly is a life-uplifting organization. I am saying so from a testimony perspective. Through this organization, I managed to change the face of my life by renovating my house which was in a pathetic state. It also enabled me to have some livestock at home and this triggered me to develop a goal of livestock farming." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"Previously, my husband worked as a hired motorbike rider, picking up a motorcycle to use as a taxi and being paid on a commission basis at the end of the day. This was exhausting, especially during the rainy season, because he would struggle to meet his daily goal. We decided to get a motorcycle on hire purchase after receiving the second transfer and making a $250 deposit. We've been paying a daily installment of $3 since then, which is manageable despite the fact that we occasionally forget to save a coin from the business. This has relieved my husband because he can now decide when to extend his working hours and, if it rains, he can always close his business until the next day. I spent the remaining $270 on a Jersey heifer from a neighbor, and I am looking forward to receiving additional liters of milk when it calves. I had another cow that, despite not being very productive, saved my family of seven a daily cost of milk, which is currently $1."

"I got married and moved to my home to start a new life as a married woman. My husband works as a motorcycle rider. We are newly married without a child. My husband has been taking care of all our basic needs but because of financial constraints, not able to buy me some new clothes. When I got enrolled in the support program, I received a mobile phone and so I received $10.6 which I used $8 to buy second-hand clothes for myself and my husband the remaining was enough to buy some sugar because I had run out of sugar on that day I received the cash. We were both delighted to have changed our wardrobe. I am grateful I got enrolled in the program."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by helping the neediest individuals in my village. Unconditional cash transfers have brought a very big impact on our lives. Currently, 100% of us have iron-roofed houses, and livestock and our children are also in school. Additionally, some of us now own businesses which have equally uplifted our living standards. I, therefore, do not see anything that GiveDirectly failed us." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)
