Sidi
received a second payment.
"My husband works as a motorcycle rider and later he bought the motorcycle through a hire purchase. The business has been on the low ever since we experienced the prolonged drought. I work as a charcoal burner to assist with the finances since all the money he makes has been going to pay for the Motorcycle. We have six children and it’s been a struggle to provide for them. As a woman, I joined a savings group to save some funds received. The savings group entails one saving $3 every week. Because of financial constraints, I used $15 to pay for my savings for the last five weeks and had not contributed and paid $5 towards school fees. The remaining cash was enough to buy my family a 4kg packet of maize flour and vegetables, which was food for the next two days."

Samuel
received a $25 second payment.
"I had been engaged in a motorcycle taxi driving for a living. However, it recently developed a mechanical problem. So I had to depend on casual jobs for the past two months. My first-grade daughter had $9 in fee arrears by the time I received my transfer. Because she was just at home, I was distressed because I had no money to pay off her fees. I am glad I settled her fee arrears with the transfer, and she finally had a minimal disruption in school. I also purchased two hens for $10, and the remainder of the transfer, $11 enabled us to obtain food. I am indebted to GiveDirectly."

Charo
received a $25 second payment.
"I am a motorcycle taxi driver and the firstborn child in our family. Because my mother is unemployed and my father's income is insufficient to support the family of eight, I frequently step in to help. However, due to the increase in fuel costs, the business has continued to struggle. As a result, I struggle to raise cash for food and to meet the needs of other households. I was able to buy food for my family after receiving my transfer. As a result, I spent $30 on food because we had run out and everyone was looking at me. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for their assistance."

Alhaji
received a second payment.
"Give directly did well to provide the funds because through the support program. I have provided food for my siblings and educated them. However, I feel that Give directly should discuss with recipients and consider buying assets for them and deducting the amount from the monthly transfers. For instance, I would have preferred the motorcycle bought for me"

Chengo
received a $25 tenth payment.
"I run a motorcycle taxi service because I don't have a formal engagement. Because I do not own a motorcycle, I rely on a friend. However, my daily income is always low, $2, whereas I always give him $4. I saved $20 in a merry-go-round immediately after I received my latest transfer to buy a motorcycle once I had saved enough money. When I get my motorcycle, I will be able to make a daily net profit of $10. Because I am a married man with a daughter, I spend the remainder on household items such as soap and maize flour. It has made my life quite easier. I appreciate GiveDirectly's charitable efforts."

Enock
received a $438 second payment.
"I have a new goal of starting up a business. Having bought a s cond hand motorcycle, has made me think of this business idea. The plan is to travel to a place called Murukan and buy firewood from people from that area. I will then use my motorcycle to transport them to my home where my wife shall be selling them to make profits. This business will require $40 to start and I am already working on a savings plan of $10 per month. My target is to then increase my stock continuously to $10. By so doing, then my wife shall also be self employed and our living standards as a family shall definitely rise. I am so much grateful to GiveDirectly for the support they gave me since this has changed my life a lot."

Mary
received a $25 second payment.
"They employed my husband casually as a motorcycle rider. We have six children and one of them suffers from epilepsy, which takes up most of our funds at least to pay for his transport to a medical facility that offers free medical checkups every week. I use $10 for transport to and from for both of us and also lunch for him since the exercise takes the whole day. I am unemployed and mostly we depend on my husband’s source of income, which is unstable. He only earns if he leases the motorcycle and works only to share the larger part of his earnings with the owner of the motorcycle. Recently, with the prolonged drought, water has been our challenge, which means when buying food, we also have to include buying water. I have opted to buy borehole water, which is cheaper than tap water; I use it a week for at least $4 for 100ltrs of water every day. Tap water is expensive and $4 is enough for only a day’s consumption. My cash transfer of $18 was used in paying school fees, and I spent the rest of $12 on food and water for only one week. I am happy to be the beneficiary of these support programs because the funds have helped me manage some of the financial problems that were weighing me down."
