How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Paying school fees for my child, who is currently in secondary school, has become increasingly difficult recently. Starting an eatery business is a new goal for me, and I am currently deciding on the restaurant concept. I have prior business experience, and it will not be difficult for me to establish one in the immediate shopping center where I can prepare and sell local foods to business people and anyone visiting the shopping center. I am heavily reliant on subsistence farming to raise capital, and I am hoping that the beans I have now will earn me a good income before the end of the year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did an excellent job in lifting many families out of poverty in our village. So far, this has been the best financial support I've ever received, allowing me to choose what to spend my money on. The amount of money I received was sufficient to create a concrete plan that would transform the lives of my five children. The staff who came to our homes started everything and saw it through to the end.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Previously, my husband worked as a hired motorbike rider, picking up a motorcycle to use as a taxi and being paid on a commission basis at the end of the day. This was exhausting, especially during the rainy season, because he would struggle to meet his daily goal. We decided to get a motorcycle on hire purchase after receiving the second transfer and making a $250 deposit. We've been paying a daily installment of $3 since then, which is manageable despite the fact that we occasionally forget to save a coin from the business. This has relieved my husband because he can now decide when to extend his working hours and, if it rains, he can always close his business until the next day. I spent the remaining $270 on a Jersey heifer from a neighbor, and I am looking forward to receiving additional liters of milk when it calves. I had another cow that, despite not being very productive, saved my family of seven a daily cost of milk, which is currently $1.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was out in the field weeding some beans crops when I got a notification on my phone. Upon checking, I realized that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy as I had never gotten such an amount before as the much I had received was KES 30000 only. I knew that these transfers would enable me to do much for my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Paying school fees for my child was a big challenge for me as I do not have a reliable source of income. When I managed to pay school fees for the whole year for my child, I saw it as the biggest difference as I have never done so before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving my transfer, I sat down and planned how to spend the money so that it can be of good use to me. I spent KES 30000 on buying a heifer for rearing. I then spent KES 16000 on paying school fees for my child who is in high school. I paid fees for the whole year so that I can have time to look for money for paying next year's school fees. The remaining amount of KES 9000, I spent on buying foodstuffs for my family and a few clothes for my family members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving money means a better living standard for the family, I have a son who joined for 1 this year and he is expected to pay KES 16,050 per year, I am planning to pay his two years school fees of KES 32,100 from GiveDirectly money. I have been practicing pottery and ceramic as my main source of income and it does not give me enough income to cater to other family needs like food since I have been earning KES 1,200 per week. I, therefore, plan to start up a small food kiosk with the remaining amount from my transfers around the village where I will be selling tea and snacks this will increase my income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I fully depend on pottery and ceramics as my main source of income and 3months ago I have been able to sell more pots and this has increased my weekly income from KES 1,200 to KES 1,800. This has brought me so much joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of financial stability is my greatest challenge, I have always desired to own a hotel for so many years, and with the hope of GiveDirectly around, I see my dream of owning a hotel come true.
