Lina
received a $453 second payment.
"In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by helping the neediest individuals in my village. Unconditional cash transfers have brought a very big impact on our lives. Currently, 100% of us have iron-roofed houses, and livestock and our children are also in school. Additionally, some of us now own businesses which have equally uplifted our living standards. I, therefore, do not see anything that GiveDirectly failed us."

Boaz
enrolled.
"I have always dreamt of being self employed and this saw me purchase a motorcycle in the month of June. Even though I bought it on loan, it is a reliable source of income because it helps me meet the basic needs of my family without strain. It has also suplimented my income as before then,I used to solely rely on maize farming which could take six months before one could get the proceeds. This has brought happiness and a difference in my life."

Mark
received a second payment.
"My new goal is to buy a motorcycle to run it as a business to raise more money for my family. I believe that after the program, I will still have a good source of income to help my family. Through this program, I was able to pay my daughter's school fees and the rest was saved to complete the full amount to purchase the motorcycle."

Chepkirui
received a $438 second payment.
"When we received the second transfer, we used $250 to build a new kitchen and used another $250 to improve our main house. For a long time, my husband and I had always looked forward to building a new kitchen that is roofed of iron sheets as we demolish the old one that we had inherited from our parents. The kitchen that we used was very old and was grass thatched. It also had a leaking roof making it very uncomfortable to stay in. We could only hope that we could get enough money and be in a position to build one but because my husband relied on odd casual jobs to sustain our needs, it became a little difficult to achieve this goal. When we received the transfer we could not hesitate to implement this project and I am so glad that we now have a kitchen while at the same time we have improved our main house by erecting a ceiling in it. We can now fully concentrate on looking for money to pay school fees for our three children who are already making progress in school. We are so happy and grateful as a family for the support that we received from GiveDirectly."

Charles
received a $438 second payment.
"I live on a small plot of land with my wife and our firstborn child, with our homestead taking up the majority of the land and the kitchen garden taking up the remainder. Since leasing a piece of land to farm on is incredibly expensive, I have relied on a motorcycle taxi business to support my family. Throughout this time, I have saved a portion of the taxi proceeds, though this has never been consistent. These savings will be useful for my new goal of purchasing additional land in the future, where we can practice subsistence farming."

Charo
received a $25 sixth payment.
"My transfer of $20 went largely toward food purchases. Being elderly, I rely on my son to take care of my needs as well as provide for my financial needs. My son works as a "boda boda" (motorcycle taxi) for a living. Due to the high cost of fuel and the scarcity of customers, he earns a very meager living from his work. When he doesn't send me money, I have to choose between going to bed hungry or getting by on just one meal a day. I'm relieved that I have access to a lot of food and that my son no longer has to work so hard to take care of me. I used the remaining funds to purchase clothes in addition to food. I have been wearing shabby and tattered clothing for the past year because I have prioritized buying food, which is my most pressing need. I'll look presentable again with the new clothes after a while."
