How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I wish to focus on horticulture farming, I will be planting vegetables, beans, sweet tomatoes and maize. This will make me get enough food for the family and sell the extra produce to earn some income to meet other basic needs including paying school fees for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The training and the enrollment were done well without any discrimination in our community. The majority of the people who received the transfer spent it well by investing in different income-generating projects. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $320 on purchasing a dairy cow, I had always wished to own a dairy cow but I did not have the money. I am a motorcycle taxi operator and the money that I would get daily was for basic household needs. I had no extra money to invest in dairy keeping project. I would spend $5 per week on buying milk. This was so costly since I had no other steady source of income. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because this was the chance to buy a dairy cow. Currently, I no longer buy milk like before. My children get enough milk and they are so grateful for the support. This had given me peace of mind to do my work perfectly since I no longer worried about where to get the money for milk. I spent $100 on purchasing materials and building a small decent kitchen house. I used to own a small grass-thatched kitchen house but I know I have a decent and more spacious one. The rest of the money I spent on food and other household basic needs. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was one of the fine days when I was relaxing on the chair after a day's work when I received a text message. At first, I wondered who could have sent me a flashback message, but I was wrong. I had just received my first lumpsum payment. This was one of the best evenings of my life. I shared the news with my spouse who could not hold the tears of joy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Our lives have improved since we started receiving the transfers. The construction of a new house for my family is so far the biggest difference in my daily life. I did not foresee such a great transformation coming before receiving this money. For all the years that I have worked I could not even own a goat worth KES 2500 not to speak of affording KES 31000 to construct a better house. We lived from hand-to-mouth and in most cases, we ate to fill our tummies and not get the required nutrients for the body. I am great full for the support and so are the rest of my family members.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After a considerate discussion and decision on spending with my household, I spent KES 31000 of the first transfer on 25 pieces of iron sheets and labor charges while constructing a new house. We had been living in a small hut that served a dual purpose of a kitchen as well as a living room and changed to a bed space later at night. As my children grow, we saw it as a good idea to construct a bigger house that has enough space to accommodate all of us. I also bought 10 pieces of iron sheets and timber at KES 10000 that is currently in use to construct a separate kitchen, bought a goat worth KES 2500, and used the remaining KES 11500 to purchase foodstuffs, a bed, and a mattress to replace the old worn out we had.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I want to build a new and specious house. The one I live in is grass thatched and sometimes when it rains the roof leaks. This makes our life uncomfortable given that my wife is to deliver soon. I'm so happy that Give Directly money will fulfill my struggle to move my family into a better house. I will also buy a cow to supply as with milk once the baby is born.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I harvested about a sack of maize in February. It is enough to feed my family for another six months. This will ease financial constraint of buying maize for consumption given that I'm jobless. We were so happy. We have not had such harvest for a long time.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I live in a grass thatched house and it was a challenge for me in getting a wife. Though she agreed to come and live with me but I have been under pressure to build a better house to please her
