"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I'm a proud owner of two cows which I have never owned. My wife died two years ago and I have never come to terms thus it affected my health. Since this transfer, I'm now able to get medication with ease since I can afford, I never used to access medication from the hospital because of lack of money and also because I don't have the energy to work for longer hours. The medicine is so expensive because the government hasn't subsidized yet. I'm now able to eat well and with better health."

"I spent part of my first transfer to buy a pair of oxen to help me improve my farming practices for better harvests. Previously I was using farm tools that were not efficient and I would manage to till a small piece of land, and for me to cultivate a large piece of land, then I would hire from my neighbours who had the oxen. hiring was expensive to me and at times I left a large piece of acreage uncultivated. I am happy that through the pair of oxen I acquired, then I will be able to cultivate more land for better harvests. Also, the pair will help me in fetching water from long distances for domestic use. I also bought a medicine kit for my cows so as to treat them in case of any infections and diseases. I also purchased three goats which I am certain that once they reproduce and increase in number, then I will be able to sell them to meet any expenses that fall due."

I also spent it partly on buying food that I used to feed my family. This helped us not to sleep without a meal. "The biggest difference is that GiveDirectly that helped to obtain treatment. I am under medication for a chronic disease that requires me to use tablets to control pain. I get daily doses courtesy of the transfers. I would have had to borrow all over from relatives and friends and this would not even come at the time of need. It was also uncomfortable as I felt as if I was turning into a beggar but I know have all my monthly supply of the medicine. This gives me some hope of living well."

"Financial inadequacy is a big hurdle in my life. This is because I am unable to adequately provide basic needs of my family such as food and medication. Currently, my sick son requires treatment, his medication alone costs 14,000 shillings and so far I have only managed to buy medicine worth 2,000. Due to his illness, we have had to incur so many debts and am overwhelmed by uncertainty of how they will be repaid. "

"I spent 30,000 KES of my second transfer to invest on my existing poultry business. For instance, I bought chicken feeds and medicine. I had started this business using my first transfer and I am yet to sell the eggs and hopefully have sustainable income. Since my land is very unproductive, I did not harvest enough maize to sustain my family for long so I used 12000 KES to purchase six sacks of maize that would last us for sometime. Lastly,I used the rest of the cash to clear fee arrears for my child who completed secondary education last year but was not allowed to collect his certificates because of the arrears."

"I spent my first transfer to invest in my two existing businesses which were not doing so well, because I lacked enough funds to restock my businesses. I was engaged in poultry farming, and I also owned a retail shop that stocked commodities like flour and sugar. I spent my transfers to add more stock to my shop and to buy feeds and medicine for my chicken. I invested in these two businesses because they are both profitable businesses and I can sustain my family with profits from the businesses. Chicken also take a short time to mature, which should bring me back profit within a short time."

"I've been buying milk from my neighbours daily and this was expensive for me. The huge bills would sometimes force me to cut the supply of milk to my household. Am happy that the transfer has enabled me to buy three cows which will provide milk for my household and also I will be able to sell to earn an income. This will also help me reduce budgetary expenses for my family. I am also hopeful that they will multiply as time goes by and in the near future, I will be owning a herd and which will create an opportunity for me to sell them at a profit and invest in other viable projects. I also purchased some medicines to keep a medical kit for them to treat them against some common infections and reduce chances of incurring other medicinal expenses later on."
