"I feel so excited in the evening owing to the fact that, It is only this time when I get relaxed and share meals with my children. My morning and afternoon hours are very busy moments to me because of the tight schedules for the day. Fetching water from a water pan which is one kilometre away and doing my usual charcoal business including other household chores make my day tiresome. Therefore, I consider evening as the happiest part of my day."

"Receiving this money means a huge relief for me in terms of accessing my basic needs of food, water and shelter. I currently reside in an old small thatched roof house that leaks during rainy seasons. With this cash, I will be able to build a new and bigger house with an iron sheets roof. I will also buy oxen and ox plough to assist me in farming since am too old to till a big portion of land manually. Last but not least, I will purchase a bicycle for my son in order to cut cost of ferrying water using a motorcycle."

"My first priority is to invest in a new business. I plan to open a salon and a cosmetics shop in Ruiru. I will first pay the premises rent and buy a blowdry and other items I might need for the salon. Secondly, I will use it to buy a dryer, and other cosmetics. I currently work as a hairdresser and I have acquired some experience, I feel I am more than capable to start my own business which will enable me to save and in future buy land outside Mathare and build a house for my mother. I value her so much and would want to give her a comfortable life, where she lacks nothing. Lastly, I want to buy some household items like a television and a water tank to store water due to water shortages we constantly face in Mathare. I need a television so as to stay updated with the current events and even watch movies and series. I am an introvert and I like staying indoors, I tend to sleep alot when I am free and would want to be entertained once in a while by programmes on the television."

"My first priority is to invest in a new business. I am a casual worker, I wash clothes for people at Eastleigh and also do construction work at construction sites. These work is very tiresome and does not pay much. I want to start a business of selling African attires here in Mathare. Previously I had tried to venture into it, I would go to Malaba to buy stock once a month, but I could not keep up with it because of the high cost of transportation. I want to put up a structure where I can sell the attires instead of hawking and be able to go to Malaba more frequently to purchase them in larger quantities. Secondly, I want to pay my childrens school fees. I am a single parent, my husband and I separated awhile ago and I was left to take care of my children all by myself. Currently he is married to the fourth wife and he does not assist me in taking care of our children. I have three children, two girls and one boy. I would want to invest in their education especially my daughters. I would not want them to drop out of school as I did. I dropped out of school at a very early age, my parents passed on and from the age of 12 I became a housemaid. I would like to give them a better life than I had, this I know I can achieve by investing in their education. Lastly, I want to be able to pay my National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF), I registered awhile ago but I have not been able to make my monthly payments. I have incurred a great interest and I would like to settle it inorder to take my children to hospital when they fall sick. One of my daughters got burnt by hot water as she fell into a sufuria while she was playing on the bed, this affected her reproductive organs. I need to be taking her to hospital for check ups but I have failed in doing so since I lack the finances. My other daughter has ulcers that causes her to faint when she has not eaten. I lack money for food at times and in school they eat maize and beans which is not good for her, this means that she has to stay without food till she comes back home and hopefully I have money to buy food. The NHIF card will come in handy whenever they need treatment."

"Receiving this money means I will be able to build a better house. The house that I currently live in is very old and during rainy seasons water flows in hence the wooden poles that support it have become weak.I have always been afraid that one day the house will collapse on me.With this money I will buy building materials and begin building a new house in a better site on my farm."

"My new goal is to invest in farming. I plan to plant watermelon and vegetables. I chose to plant these crops because the climatic condition and soil in this area are favorable for this kind of crops. I did thorough research and found out the best inputs to use and how to take care of them and so I am sure my crops will do well. This will earn me extra money and I will be able to settle most of my family's needs."

"My husband who is diabetic is now enjoying an ample time to make as many visits as they are required to the hospital and at the same time having enough time to think of other projects that will enable us to raise future school fees. We are also under a balanced diet in our household which is my joy since my children are feeding well. Apart from all these, the biggest difference is the fact that fetching water from the long distant rivers is now a story of the past in our household. This is due to the large water tank which we bought in our family. Rainy seasons to us are great blessings since we have made it our business to ensure that every drop of water from our roof goes to the large tank which we placed strategically below the gutters. Washing and taking care of our grandmother has been so easy for the last few months since we have plenty of water which save us enough time to wash her clothes and maintain other general cleanliness."

"Considering my job of selling palm wine, I am required to camp at my selling point up to mid night when I come back home to rest. When I wake up in the morning at around eight, I go and fetch water from the nearby pan. It is in the afternoon when I get ample time to rest and share meals with my children who would have come back home from school by then. Therefore, I consider afternoon as the happiest part of my day."
