received a $22 twentieth payment.
"My new goal in the next four is to buy water tank. I am currently saving some part of the monthly transfers and so far this dream seems achievable. Everything is working out well and there is hopes of fulfilling this dream. We currently fetch water from a water point that is very far which becomes very slippery when it rains. We are times forced to fetch water during such moments because we don't have a storage tank."

"Traveling to and from the dam in search of water has been tedious work to me. Making it much harder is the rugged terrain characterized by rocky and partly muddy routes during rainy seasons. Fetching water in our culture is an activity meant strictly for women and in their absence children would always take that role. I have been doing this since I was married and currently, I have made up my mind to change things around. Buying a large water tank is the first idea which I had in mind after receiving the first transfer only that it wasn't a priority. After completion of the house construction, I now have an additional goal to purchase a large water tank. This will act as a reservoir which will always be collecting rainwater from the rooves. an estimated cost at the moment is around 22000 KES which is really manageable as far as the merry-go-round we have been fully participating in is still running."

"Financial constraint is the biggest hardship that my family is facing. My husband who is the only bread winner is asthmatic. During cold seasons like now, he is never in good health to tend to his business of vending water due to the powerful medications that he is taking. This has even forced my son who just finished primary school last year to migrate to Mombasa to take care of him and also continue his fathers business of vending water in order to get even just ksh.100 to take care of his siblings back home when the father is still ailing."

"Maintaining my mud house has been a costly affair .This is because of the availability of materials to do this. There is a special type of soil which I buy to maintain the mud walls. One bucket costs me 1 USD.When I receive the transfers,I want to build a two bedroom house made of timber. This will cost me not less than Ksh 30,000(300 USD).I also have a plan of buying a plastic tank(2500 litres) at a cost of Ksh 16,000(160 USD).We have a problem of getting clean water especially during the dry season since we depend on water pans. With the tank I will be able to collect water during the rainy season to serve me when there is shortage of clean water."

received a $22 twentieth payment.
"My son's education comes first before anything else. Once I have settled his expenses, I am planning to save some money and buy a water tank. I want to start harvesting rainwater. I currently spend quite a lot of money to buy water since where we fetch is very far. I will be able to save a lot once I buy a water reservoir."

"My expectation in the near future is to invest well and live a more comfortable life. I also want to improve my lifestyle by building a better house and buying a water tank. This will reduce the number of resources that goes into these activities. Generally, want to have an improved life now that I am getting old and Give Directly are also almost finishing their projects in this village."

"My current house is just one room with mud walls and a grass thatched roof.I have always wished to own a better house. When I receive this money I will make my wish come true.I will build a iron roofed house with two rooms(300 USD).With the house I will comfortably host visitors without disturbance from smoke from the kitchen. The house will also help me collect rain water.Water shortage is an issue in this area but during the rainy season I can collect and store to serve me during the dry seasons.I also want to fence my compound using barbed wire to help contain my two cows within the compound. This will make it much easier to feed them instead of tying them the whole day using a rope. "In my village, we have been experiencing serious water shortage especially during the drought season. The waterpoints are extremely far hence very tiresome to bring water home for use. I and my spouse have been saving the transfers we get to purchase a water tank which by the end of the coming four months, we will have already acquired it."

Kadzo
received a $530 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying two dairy cows. I have been dreaming to own a few livestock for so long but since they were expensive I could not afford to buy them. I bought them after getting transfers from Give Directly. I then cleared school fees for my children to enable them to continue with their studies. There was a high chance that they could have missed their end year exams. They were always forced to repeat the same class yearly because they were always missed to sit for their end year exams. I am glad I didn't let them down this time round. I then bought a few water tanks which will help me in harvesting rain water. Our dams are very far from the village, therefore, the tanks will save me from the hustle of walking for long hours carrying heavy jerrycans of water. I used the remaining amount of money to buy enough foodstuffs for my family that would take us to the next harvesting season."
