Mercy
received a $538 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer to buy a water tank with a capacity of 2300 liters. I settled on this so that I will be using it to harvest rainwater during the rainy season. I usually walk for a long distance looking for clean water for domestic use and it is always tiring and time-consuming. Also, I bought a heifer and I believe that it will be calving soon thus I will be getting an income through milk sales. I spent the remaining amount to start a business in my compound. I bought all the necessary stock required for the running of a shop business. I made this decision to help me increase my daily income as I utilize my time and energy there."

"I now collect water with the bicycle I bought with the GiveDirectly cash transfer. Additionally, I acquired an ox to pair up with the one I had to facilitate ploughing. Before I got the transfers, I could pair my ox with the other members of the village who also had one which was not reliable. I carried water on my head and I often suffered from back pain."

Nancy
received a $537 initial payment.
"Because of the poor roads in my rural home, we as residents rely on donkeys to transport water and farm produce among other things. I know how costly this has been for my family thus upon receiving these transfers from GiveDirectly, I decided to buy two donkeys and a cart. I am so glad this has given me a business opportunity as well as serving my domestic needs. I am already enjoying a good business opportunity that has improved my daily income. Owning my donkeys and a cart means financial independence. I am glad as I am now self-employed and because of enjoying the profits alone, I have been able to cater for the family's daily basic needs on time and remain with something to save for other investments."

"Depending on farming has been a challenge for me for many years. We only depend on maize farming in this area which has not been doing well for years. This is mainly due to crop diseases.During the dry season we go through the hardship of getting food because what we harvest does not sustain us for a longer period. We also lack clean water because we mainly depend on water pans which is not safe for drinking. At my age depending on farming is becoming more difficult because I do not have enough energy like before to do farm work. This has limited my income even further."

"Due to old age and because I live alone, fetching water has been quite a hustle. Therefore, I plan to spend 35000 shillings on a 5000 litres water tank for storage. Secondly, I will repair the walls and floor of my house at a cost of 40000 to make it more durable and strong in harsh weather. The balance will go into my savings account for future needs such as medical care etc. "

David
received a $22 twentieth payment.
"In four months’ time, my new goal for my life is to procure a water tank for harvesting and saving water. We live in a village where people have made a lot of partitions and fenced their farms making a movement with water so inaccessible. The water shortage that is also experienced in the region is also very inconveniencing and so the need for the water tank."

Gladys
received a $539 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a water tank for storing clean water. Getting clean water for drinking in our place is not an easy task. I used to walk for a long distance to fetch water. This was so challenging because I had other chores at home. My children could help me after school but I did not like this because it was taking much of their time which they could have used in doing their homework assignments. Currently, I have bought 10,000 liters water tank and this has enabled me to devote much of my time to other chores at home. I do not have to walk for a long distance as before. We now have clean water for drinking and we are no longer exposed to water-borne diseases because we treat the water in the tank. My children have enough time to do their own assignment and this has led to the improvement of performance at school. I'm so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our standard of living."
