How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The house I finished building with GD transfers is the biggest difference in my life. It was my desire to have a decent house and i had started struggling through casual work to raise money to buy materials. Since I only had a small income from casual work, I knew it would take me a long time to finish building the house. With the help of GD transfers, the time taken to build the house was very short because I had the finances to buy all the materials at once. It was one of my proud moment when I finished constructing the house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I feel GD did very well in helpig out the needy in the community by giving everyone money to use in the way they felt they needed help. It would have not been helpful if they had given out an item to everyone in the village. There is nothing GD is not doing well according to me.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my transfer on buying building materials which I used to finish constructing a house I started constructing a year ago. I had started saving part of my income from casual work to buy building materials. Since the income was not much, I took long to finish constructing the house until I received my transfers from GD. The transfers helped me in buying materials which I used on finishing the construction. The rest of the transfer I used to clear fees arrears for my children who had been given a warning about being sent home so that they may not be sent home and to buy food for my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I have been living in a grass thatched house, with no hopes of upgrading to a better house considering the financial hardship that I have been going through. When GiveDirectly came to my life, things have changed. My life living standards have improved because when I received this transfer, I spent it in the best way that changed my life. I bought 26 pieces of iron sheets, building poles and nails. I am now in the process of constructing a new decent and iron-roofed house. At least I will be having a good shelter.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had woken up and was ready to start my day's activities when I heard a message notification on my phone. When I checked the contents of the message, I realized it was from GiveDirectly. They had sent me my first transfer. I felt happy for this fortune would change my life completely. I bet my life has never been the same since that day. I continue to thank this organization for changing my life.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent a larger portion of the first transfer on purchasing building materials which include iron sheets, nails and building poles in order to build a new house for my family. My desire was to build a better house since the one I was living in was in a bad state. It was a grass-thatched house that was almost collapsing. I am in the process of building a new house with the transfers I received from Give Directly. I spent the remaining amount to cater for my family's basic needs such as foodstuffs and paying for other households expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Due to old age and because I live alone, fetching water has been quite a hustle. Therefore, I plan to spend 35000 shillings on a 5000 litres water tank for storage. Secondly, I will repair the walls and floor of my house at a cost of 40000 to make it more durable and strong in harsh weather. The balance will go into my savings account for future needs such as medical care etc.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My best part of the day is afternoon when am relaxing in a shade outside my house. I love the cool breeze from the trees.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
After retirement in 2017, I came back to the village to stay with my family. Months later, my wife fell very ill and passed away while my children left for Mombasa town in search of jobs. Due to Government bureaucracies, I have not started receiving my pension funds and this has left me destitute for I have no one to depend on. I sometimes have to borrow from friends and neighbors which is quite embarrassing because they all know I was once employed but have nothing to show for it. I even had to move to the farthest part of the village away from everyone to escape the humiliation.
