"When I withdrew the money, I desired to keep some livestock at home knowing that that can be converted to monetary value at any time if the need arises. Concerning that, I bought a cow for KES 20000.00 and 3 goats for KES 7400.00. I also bought 10 pieces of iron sheets for KES 10900.00 intending to build a new house and give out the old ones to my children. Being a parent of 5 primary school children it was not my pleasure to see them being sent out of school due to school fees. Thus, I paid KES 2500.00 in advance for them so that they could concentrate in their studies. Thereafter, I used the remaining amount in buying some food for my family."

"Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means renovation of my house. The roof has been leaking whenever it rains and this has affected my life. Renovating my house will cost me KES 30,000 because I am planning to use durable iron sheets. I will use the balance to buy goats for domestic rearing. Buying goats is a great investment in the village and they will reward me in the future. Any income from the sell of goats will aid in the education of my children and grandchildren."

"Education of my grandchildren has been my priority for long. My children in town engage in casual jobs which are not paying well and can not guarantee their children education. I will use KES 40,000 from the GiveDirectly transfers to pay for my grandchildren school fees. I will later use a further KES 15,000 to buy goats for domestic rearing. I will later sell the goats to buy food for my family. Doing all this will make me happy."

"I earn a living working as a mason. I earn very little from the job due to the challenges of not working daily. This has made me struggle to provide basic needs for my family (food, clothing, and paying school fees). When I received my first transfer, I spent KES 17000 to pay the school fee debt for my son, who completed his secondary education in March. Besides paying school fees for him, I spent KES 11000 on buying iron sheets and nails to build him a house. The house I live in is too small to accommodate all the members of the family (wife and seven children) since it is a one-bedroomed house. I also spent KES 20000 on buying 5 goats as a start on the journey of livestock farming. Because of my unstable source of income, livestock farming will provide me with an alternative way of earning income. I purchased food with the remaining amount to avoid my family from starving. My family has survived on one meal per day and sometimes sleeps on empty stomachs."

"I am a widow who depends on casual jobs selling charcoal and firewood to earn a living. 1o years ago my house fell down due to the weak poles. Since then, I have lived in a makeshift house partly covered by polythene paper with my four children. The house is very tiny and cannot accommodate all my family members. When I received my first transfer, I purchased 24 bags of cement, building poles, and 18 pieces of iron sheets to build a new house for my family. Besides building the house, I spent KES 10000 on buying 4 goats. I bought the goats to act as a source of investment for the future. Once they multiply in numbers, I will sell some and use the money to attend to my most pressing needs. Finally, I spent the remaining amount on buying food for my family. I have struggled to provide them with food because of the lack of a stable income, forcing us to survive on one meal per day and sometimes sleeping on empty stomachs."

"Buying the livestock has made a tremendous difference in my life since receiving the transfer. The goats are an investment for the future once they multiply in numbers. I can sell some and use the money to attend to my health attention when I don’t have money.  "

"For the past ten years, I have been sleeping on a sisal twine bed without a mattress. This affected my health and caused severe back pains. When I received my transfer, I spent KES 14000 on buying a bed and a mattress that will ease my pain and help me sleep comfortably. I bought 10 pieces of iron sheets, building poles, nails, and sisal twine ropes I used to build a new extra room for my children. My family is growing and my one-roomed house is not enough to accommodate all the members of my family (husband, 6 children, and 4 grandchildren). I spent KES 4000 on buying a solar lamp after struggling for so long to light my house. I mostly used a torch to light the house during the night because the lantern lamps require paraffin, which is currently very expensive. Finally, I spent KES 10000 on buying 2 goats as a future investment. Once the goats multiply, I can sell some and use the money to attend to my most pressing needs."

"In this household, i take care almost of everything that i need to survive. I have two sons who are in mombasa but their daily earnings can not even sustain themselves. Because of that life situation, i have always wanted to have cows, goats and variety of poultry. Therefore, when i manage to have my transfer i would wish to purchase all the animals mentioned so that whenever i get into a situation of financial need then i will be in a position to handle it. With a budget of at least 45000KES, i can start the idea very well."

"Receiving this money means a decent house for my family. Currently, I am living in a grass thatched and small house without even a room. The walls of the house are almost falling off. I have wished to own a better house but due to financial instabilities, I have not achieved my dream. I am a charcoal burner and my earnings are as little as KES 1500- 2500 per month. This amount is not enough to cater to all our household needs. I plan to use KES 50000 to build a two-bedroom house with an iron sheet roof that is spacious enough to accommodate us comfortably. I will further use KES 15000 to buy 5 goats that will act as a long-term investment project for my household. The remaining amount will be invested in the children's educational needs."

"Receiving this money means a source of wealth to me. I plan to achieve this through livestock rearing. I will use KES 70000 to buy 10 indegious goats and 2 cows. I will later sell them at a profit and save the money for rainy days. I will further use KES 15000 to buy a modern new bed and mattress to replace the traditional bed that does not give me nice sleep. The remaining amount will cater for other household expenses like food."
