How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am hoping that before the year ends, when I receive some money I look after my husband's health because he's still recuperating. Apart from that, I also intend on focusing your nutrition since it is a recurring challenge after me and my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I have nothing but praise when he comes to the organization and the work that it has done back in the village for me and other people as well. The funds I received enabled my husband to seek medical attention which I am grateful for to date.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
At the time I was receiving the transfers my husband was quiet unwell I needed to be operated on. therefore I ended up spending more than half of the transfers so that he could get hospitalized and receive treatment. I then proceeded to spend KES 20,000 to finish payment on the piece of land that I had bought using the first transfers. The little funds that I ended up remaining with I used the nutrition.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I got messages on my phone and since I could not comprehend them, I called for my helper who confirmed to me that I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I felt happy and could not thank them enough for giving us the transfer to improve our living standards. I could now buy building materials to renovate my roof which was leaking uncontrollably whenever it rained.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My living house has been leaking uncontrollably when it rains because its roof is old and dilapidated. This made its walls also to be weak and I could not afford to renovate it on time. I am a casual labourer and the money I get from my daily jobs was enough to cater for food only. I could not improve my house using my resources. I am glad that upon receiving the transfer, I purchased 16 pieces of iron sheets and nails to renovate the roof. I also purchased a new bed and a mattress and replaced the beddings that I have been using for years. I can now afford a good sleep on my new beddings. Renovating the roof and having a good place to sleep on has brought the biggest difference in my daily life so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer has greatly improved my life in a way that I did not anticipate. I have been surviving on menial jobs that do not pay well. The little money I got was just for food and fees for my children, which at times was not enough. I was not able to renovate my living house despite its roof leaking every rainy season. Also, I could not even change the beddings that I have been using ever since I got married 37 years ago. I am happy that when I received my first transfer, I spent Ksh. 21000 on buying two modern beds and two mattresses for myself and the children. At least I can now afford to sleep well on my new beddings. I also purchased 16 pieces of iron sheets and nails to renovate my roof. It is now decent and stable. I am now at peace living in this house even if there is a heavy downpour because I am safe. I spent the remaining amount on buying enough foodstuffs for my family. I bought a bag of maize and vegetables daily which ensured that we enjoy three meals a day as a family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means renovation of my house. The roof has been leaking whenever it rains and this has affected my life. Renovating my house will cost me KES 30,000 because I am planning to use durable iron sheets. I will use the balance to buy goats for domestic rearing. Buying goats is a great investment in the village and they will reward me in the future. Any income from the sell of goats will aid in the education of my children and grandchildren.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Waking up every morning healthy makes me happy because of the pains I fell at night.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have developed some chest pains resulting from engaging in energy draining tasks like charcoal burning. At night, the pain persists affecting my sleep.
