How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal which is to start a grocery business in town. Since for now, I do not have a reliable source of income, I trust that this business will be of great support to my family in general. I will not have to strain much to fend for their basic needs as before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirecrly did a commendable job by ensuring they visited every needy household. Currently, there is a very huge transformation in terms of the developments such as buildings, and livestock among others. Most of us now can take good care of ourselves without straining like before. I can't single out anything that deserves a change so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a bed and a mattress at a total cost of KES 13000. For quite some time, I have been sleeping on old mats which I was not comfortable with at all. My children could always complain of back pains as a result. We all now feel relieved because we are sleeping in a conducive environment. I later bought iron sheets, nails and timber which was for the construction of a new house. The current one was too small to accommodate my six family members. This forced three of my children to sleep at their grandmother's house where they were not comfortable at all. As a parent, I now feel great shelter under one roof with all my family members. In addition to that, I paid fees for my son who graduated from high school two years ago. I am thankful that he was finally offered his certificate. With the remaining amount of money, farmer food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The phone rang while I was tilling the land. I checked it out and found out that I had received my first transfer. I was thrilled and immediately stopped what I was doing and headed home. Everyone in my family was happy when I told them about the good news. We gathered as a family and prayed, thanking the Lord for the miracle.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Ever since my son completed his secondary education, I have had no peace after the school withheld his academic certificates due to school fees arrears. This has made him cannot progress his education further. Using the money from the transfer to clear the school fee debt is the biggest difference the funds have made in my life because I am no longer stressed and have peace of mind.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I earn a living working as a mason. I earn very little from the job due to the challenges of not working daily. This has made me struggle to provide basic needs for my family (food, clothing, and paying school fees). When I received my first transfer, I spent KES 17000 to pay the school fee debt for my son, who completed his secondary education in March. Besides paying school fees for him, I spent KES 11000 on buying iron sheets and nails to build him a house. The house I live in is too small to accommodate all the members of the family (wife and seven children) since it is a one-bedroomed house. I also spent KES 20000 on buying 5 goats as a start on the journey of livestock farming. Because of my unstable source of income, livestock farming will provide me with an alternative way of earning income. I purchased food with the remaining amount to avoid my family from starving. My family has survived on one meal per day and sometimes sleeps on empty stomachs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Education for my children up to the tertiary level has been my ambition. I have five kids who are in primary school of which they possess huge fee balances. The work that I do cannot afford to buy food and pay school fees. Receiving this money will be a relief, I will use twenty thousand Kenya shillings to clear school arrears for my children. Fifty thousand Kenya shillings to construct a four-bedroom muddy house that will accommodate my family. The remaining amount is to purchase a second-hand motorbike to transport charcoal to the market. For this, I will be able to save the transport fee and extend it to food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My firstborn son recently got a job in Mariakani. He completed class eight two years ago and was jobless. This brought me joy because I know that he will assist me in raising his siblings.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I do charcoal burning to earn a living, in a day I can afford to get two hundred Kenya shillings in every sack of charcoal. I transport them using a bicycle to the nearby market which has a capacity of carrying carry three sacks on each trip. It has been a challenge to go back on the following day due to exhaustion and fatigue. And as a breadwinner, I have to force myself to do it since my family needs to be taken care of.
