"The first payment which I received from GiveDirectly as my initial transfer has enabled me to make a greater step in life. First, I spent KES 20000 on adding more stock for my cereal business. I injected this amount so that I can earn more profit. I then spent another KES 22000 on buying a heifer for rearing. I then bought some furniture at KES 6800, water container at KES 1500 and food at KES 5000"

Bornes
received a $501 initial payment.
"I am one of Mau Forest evictees, and since we were kicked out of the water catchment tower life haven't been the same again. When GiveDirectly came to my parental home I had been given a house to live by my relatives and I would go out to look for some casual jobs to raise money for food for my family. Luckily, I was enrolled to be part of the recipients and W when I received my first transfers, I spent KES 38000 on buying an 1/8th of an acre where I am in the process of building our new home. I also spent KES 10000 on purchasing building materials for constructing a new house. The remaining amount, I spent on buying some maize, clothes, shoes and beddings such as matress and blankets."

Purity
enrolled.
"My day is usually very busy. I start by doing the house chores and fetching water. I then embark on looking for charcoal to sell. This involves a lot of movement and hard work in the scorching sun. I am usually tired by the end of the day. Evening comes as a relief to me since I get time to relax after a busy day. This makes it the happiest part of my day."

Janet
received a $502 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is our new house which we recently completed and we now enjoy a more specious room. Not only about the specious room alone now I can harvest rain water which we can use for cooking and laundry. Before we were living in a small grass tauched where we were forced to renew the roofing materials before rainy season began."

Sidi
received a $501 initial payment.
"I spent my transfer on buying a cow at KES 17000 which I am currently keeping in my homestead. I did not have any livestock in my compound though I desired to own them. I could not afford to buy at my own cost. I am happy that I will be selling the milk to earn some income. I am also expecting it to reproduce and have many of them. In addition to this, I also bought a plastic water tank. At least I have a water storage now that we are facing a water shortage in our region. I also did some shopping on new clothes for my myself and for my family. I also had some some debts which I cleared through the transfer. I spent the remaining amount on buying daily foodstuffs for my family."
