Jane
received a $378 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my life is that now am able to have time to look after my children, am able to cook lunch for them even to wash their clothes. I never used to cook lunch for them as I was always at the farm irrigating my crops but now with the water pump I bought I have my personal time again and am very thankful may God bless the organisation."

Saidi
received a $366 second payment.
"I used my second cash transfer to build a new house..In this, half of the cash will be used to pay the builders and to buy them enough food so that they can have energy to work.
Secondly, I used some of the cash to purchase kitchen utensils such as plates, basins, pails as well as pots..It costed me about k50,000 to purchase all the required necessities for my kitchen..I'm so happy and very excited that I now have a big basin that I can use for fetching water."

"The biggest hardship I face is not having enough money to take care of myself and my daughter. I depend on casual labor like farming in other people's farms and fetching water for those who are building houses. I make about $1.95 per day when I find the piece works. Unfortunately, it's not everyday that I find work to do."

"I am an operation patient and because of that I don't do anymore hardwork. I lay baskets in the St. Paul River to catch crayfish. I wake up very early, daily, to go to the river and set my baskets. I have to lay many baskets so that I can catch more crayfish and sell it during the weekend. I am always in the water, from morning to evening. It is from the sale of the crayfish that I sponsor my children in school.
When I get this transfer, I will use it to send my children to school and my burden to wake up early and get in the river will reduce. If the money will be much, after paying my children's school fees, I will give the remaining amount to my wife to start a business, which will also reduce my burden as it relates to providing food for my family."

"Receiving this money is a blessing to me and my family because I believe my life will now change to the better. I have been living in this house for over 2 years and I struggle during rainy season because it leaks. I plan to use the money to buy iron sheets to improve my grass thatched roof. I know if i have an iron sheet roofed house i will be sleeping peaceful during rainy season without worrying about water leakage. This money can help me buy enough iron sheets for the house and also use the other money to buy food. I would like to add some bags of maize so that i have adequate food to last me for a couple of months coming ahead"

Gilbert
received a $484 second payment.
"I spent KES 25,000 of the second transfer on purchasing a heifer. I buy milk daily and this is so costly for me since I do not have a continuous source of income. I also started poultry keeping project at a cost of KES 3,000. These are ten hens in total. This earns me an income through the sales of eggs. I also purchased a sky blast for storing water for drinking. My children now have access to clean water unlike before. I bought sofa set seats and food for the family. The rest of the money we spent on clothes and other household items. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

Kache
received a $502 initial payment.
"It was exactly 9 o'clock when I have gone to the nearby water pan to fetch water for the family. Along the way, I heard continuous message alerts on my phone. I had to reach the house for my helper to check the message since I am illiterate. Upon checking I was surprised to be informed that it was the transfer from GiveDirectly. I felt very happy for receiving my transfer knowing that the problem of poor shelter will finally be forgotten."

"It was around 10 o'clock, I was on my way back home from fetching water at the water pan which is located approximately 2 kilometers from my house. Upon checking, I learned that it was the transfer GiveDirectly had promised to sent us during the enrollment stage. I felt extremely happy for receiving my transfer which would transform my life for the better. I went home to inform me wife about the good news and we jointly celebrate and thank God for the opportunity."

Kadzo

"We are experiencing drought in our area. My day starts at around 6 am by traveling to look for water for the family. I always return home at around 11 am exhausted carrying 20 liters of water on my head. I had left my phone charging in my house, I decided to check my phone and upon checking, I realized that I had received the transfer. I felt very happy and relieved since the struggle of providing enough food for the family had finally got a solution."
