"Receiving this money would mean that I would be able to extend my house, which has always been my plan, so that it accomodates all my children since currently it only has 2 rooms and I have 4 children living with me. So I would buy extra iron sheets and extend the house. Then I would also buy 2 goats and rear them. I would make sure that they breed and produce morw so that I am able to sell some in future in times of need. The other part of the money I would use it for the most important element, thus, buy bags of fertilizer. I would buy 3 or 4 bags of fertilizer and apply in my field. I believe that would be sufficient with the way I farm and this would in turn help me have enough harvest next thereby avoiding hunger like the one I am facing this year."

"Had I not received the transfer, I would still be living in the dilapidated house. There was already a need to build a house even before GiveDirectly visited us but I did not have the ability especially with my old age to do that. I am happy that I am now living in good houses and I have two goats to rear."

"My smallest child is a senior in secondary school. I'm optimistic that he'll do well on his final exams and pursue his goal of becoming a lawyer. I have struggled mightily over the past three years to educate my son as a subsistence farmer. The ongoing drought caused me to lose my only source of income. To get money for his tuition, I sold all six of the goats at deeply discounted prices. As a result, I spent KES 1000 on his tuition when I got my transfer. In addition to paying for education, I set aside KES 1500 with the goal of purchasing livestock as a long-term investment. Once the cattle multiply, this will assist me in increasing my fortune. I'll sell some in an emergency and use the proceeds to meet my immediate demands. After using up all of the food in the house, I finally used the remaining KES 500 to purchase food."

"Of course yes, I have an ambition of making my goats' investment a major investment. Therefore, I aim to add more goats once I get some cash to expand the investment. Currently, I have some small businesses like selling some charcoal and I am using the money to fend for my family and saving some to add the goats."

"When I received the second transfer, the first thing I did was add stock to my shop business which I started using the first transfer. I added a stock worthy of KES 30000.00 to make the business more stable and to be able to provide almost all the needs of the customers. I also bought a cow for KES 11000.00 and three goats for KES 9000.00. The aim of buying the cow is for milk provision for my family because I have been buying some milk for them which is very expensive. The goats are for remembering GiveDirectly. As they give birth, the symbol or the presence of GiveDirectly will not disappear from my home."

"Well as a household we'll divide it in such a way that some funds will be allocated to buy 3 bags of fertilizer for we feel like that number would be ideal to help us have a bumper harvest next season. The other portion would be used to buy 7 goats. We would buy 7 goats because we plan on breeding them for business and that number is just fine considering that of those, some might get sick and die so the survival rate might still be good even if 2 or 3 die."

"My spouse died some years back and at the time of his death, we had five children who are currently all in primary school. I have since then been fully providing for them both emotionally and financially and I must admit that it has not been easy. I burn charcoal for sale which is the main economic activity practiced by nearly everyone in our region. The money from it can not adequately sustain my family's needs, especially the school fees for my children and hence, the huge school fee arrears they owe the school. Therefore, I used the past three months' transfers to pay for a tuition fee of KES 2000, bought two goats and two chickens for business worth KES 6000, and used KES 1000 to purchase some of the foodstuffs for my family. The money has been of great help, especially in paying for school fees, and through it, the school fee arrears have been greatly reduced."

"Having received the second transfer, I bought 3 goats which cost KES 15000 and poultry whose value was KES 4200. These will come in handy should need arise. Additionally, part of the second transfer was utilized in completing my house whose construction was pioneered by the first transfer. My husband and I do sell charcoal to make ends meet. I am glad that we have a modest and spacious house where everyone is comfortable with. Thanks to GiveDirectly, we would still be confined in a tiny room called a house."

"I plan to use the cash transfer to build a new house by first procuring about 24 iron sheets and start layering bricks..The house I am currently living in is not comfortable enough for both me and my children so If I build a new house I feel like there will be more space for everyone. The cash transfer will also help me to purchase livestock especially goats to be raising around the house so that it can be helping us in finding income. Lastly, I will procure at least 10 bags of maize so that I can have enough food throughout the end of the year and be able to eat 2-3 times a day."

"I spent part of my second transfer on paying fees of KES 4000 for my five kids in primary school. They have been staying home for almost two weeks because of the arrears which have been stressing them a lot. The money came in good time because they would be forced to repeat the same grade if they would miss the exams. Also, I bought a bed and mattress for a total of KES 11000. This was to replace the traditional bed that I have been using for years. I used to experience lots of fatigue and pains, especially every morning and this could hinder me from doing house chores. In addition, I bought three pieces of iron sheets KES 1800 for the completion of my house which was under construction. Also bought two goats at KES 8000 that will serve as the main assets that I will rely on at any time. I later bought foodstuffs for my family and other household needs."
