Karembo received a $442 second payment.
"when I got the second transfer, my children were one week old at home after being sent out of school due to school fees and some fee arrears which in combination had accumulated to KES 24000.00 for my four children. Thereafter, I completed my house which I had started using the first transfer. I bought poles and rafters for KES 5000.00 and paid a labor charge of KES 8500.00 to the contractor. I also bought two goats for KES 7000.00 and six plastic chairs for KES 4500.00 because I had no chairs at my home and it was shameful giving logs to visitors to seat on. As of now, I am confident of receiving visitors."

"Receiving this money will help me to buy livestocks such as goats. I will buy four goats which would cost me $80 because each goat is sold at $20. This will help me in the future because I will be selling them to provide all the basic needs such as food, clothes and body lotion for my family."

"In the first place I will buy 3 bags of fertilizer and apply in my maize field which is about 1.5 acres. This would give a guarantee that next year I will have sufficient food stock. Next I would buy livestock like 2 goats and some chicken. These would come in handy in future as I have always wanted to venture into livestock selling business and I feel like these funds would help me start up that business."

"For now, I do not have any new goals and I am gladly working on the ones that I was able to attain. The goats that I now own will be of huge support, especially for my children's education. As time goes by, I know they will increase in number and I will no longer strain on raising the fees for my school-going children. I am so optimistic that they will study comfortably without any disruptions like before."

"I spent part of my second transfer on buying three goats at a total of KES 15000. For so many years, I have been yearning to own them but I couldn't afford any at my cost because they were expensive. Having them has restored my joy and hope in life because I believe I will no longer have to strain in case of any financial emergencies. Also, I bought iron sheets at KES 25000, and building poles for 10000, for the construction of a new house for my five children who have been sleeping at their friend's houses. My house was not spacious enough besides, they are now grownups and deserved privacy. I also paid KES 3500 for my son in primary school and this has enabled him to sit for the exams with his colleagues. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my seven family members and other household needs."

"To support my family (wife and three grandchildren), I rely on fishing as a source of income. Because I go fishing every two days, the money I get from this practice is barely enough to cover all basic expenses like food and school tuition for my children. I decided to start keeping cattle to complement my income and afford all household expenses.  These animals will grow and increase in value in the future, providing sufficient income for family demands when I sell them. That is why I utilized the full amount to purchase two goats to start my rearing venture."

"I spent KES 16,000 of the most recent transfer to boost my goat rearing by purchasing 5 more goats. These animals are a long-term investment for the children's educational needs, now that they are still in primary school my intention is to keep the livestock so that I might sell them in the future to support their secondary and college education. Additionally, I bought two modern beds and 2 mattresses for KES 18,000 for my 5 children since they were spending their nights on the old, small traditional beds which were not comfortable. They were constantly complaining of backbone pains every morning something that would further affect their concentration in school. Finally, with the remaining amount, I bought sufficient foodstuffs for the family because we are experiencing drought and famine in our area at the moment."

"I used KES 16000 to pay school fees for my two daughters who were joining ng secondary school then. I also used part of the money to do some shopping for then as they joined their secondary school to pursue their dreams. The amount that remained was used to buy goats for rearing. I made a decision to buy goats since they would easily multiply and help me in paying school fees for my children in the near future. I am personally very grateful to GiveDirectly for the support that I received from them. The support came at a time that I was feeling very helpless having had my husband involved in an accident. I was left to look for school fees for my children all by myself but GiveDirectly helped me do this with so much ease."

"We used KES 42000 to buy livestock; goats and a dairy cow. The amount that remained after we spent on these was used to buy clothes ,food and other basic household needs and to pay school fees for our four children . We are so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support that we received and how it was of great assistance to us. Before receiving GiveDirectly transfers we did not own any livestock since the amount of money that we got from our various hustles was hardly enough to buy the family food. I rely entirely on subsistence farming while my husband works as a carpenter. Whatever little amount that we get is normally channelled towards payment of school fees for our children and to buy food."

"When I withdrew the money, I first paid KES 12000.00 for college fees for my child who was on the verge of dropping out of college due to lack of fees. I also KES 15000.00 and 8000.00 for paying school fees for my three and form two respectively. I did this payment because my children had been out of school for a whole term due to school fee balances. I also bought two 5 for KES 15000.00. I preferred the goats over a cow because they can cope with the drought situation in our area. Thereafter, I opted to use the remaining amount to buy some food for my family."
