How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After working hard to accomplish the goals that I had earlier. I do not have any new goals to work on since there is no means of getting another money. I am very sure of thinking of one once I have cash.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly did well for enrollment every household into the program. Also, following up on the transfers after they sent them to us to ensure that it has the maximum benefit on us. All these stages had been of great help as we had the right to engage and have a good connection with its personnel. I do not think there is anything that the organisation did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 16,000 of the most recent transfer to boost my goat rearing by purchasing 5 more goats. These animals are a long-term investment for the children's educational needs, now that they are still in primary school my intention is to keep the livestock so that I might sell them in the future to support their secondary and college education. Additionally, I bought two modern beds and 2 mattresses for KES 18,000 for my 5 children since they were spending their nights on the old, small traditional beds which were not comfortable. They were constantly complaining of backbone pains every morning something that would further affect their concentration in school. Finally, with the remaining amount, I bought sufficient foodstuffs for the family because we are experiencing drought and famine in our area at the moment.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still vividly remember, it was around 7 AM when I was preparing breakfast for my family when my son alerted me that I had received a message. Since I am illiterate, I requested him to check who it could be. Upon reading them, he confirmed that I had received my first cash transfer from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and felt blessed for receiving such a blessing. Without wasting time, we started planning on how to utilize the money without wasting a single coin.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have livestock more so goats. Goats reproduce twice a year and their pastures are readily available in my region. This is an assurance that I will have many of them within a short period. I settled for the goats purposely for my children's education because this has been the main challenge. For now, some of my children are still young and by the time they will be transitioning to colleges and universities, I will not have to strain in paying the fees. Apart from that, in case of any emergency, I will be able to sell one or two and settle the matter. I consider this a relief to my family because my spouse has been the breadwinner with a low income and making the ends meet was not achievable. Currently, some have started reproducing which makes me believe that very soon all my dreams will be accomplished.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying six goats at a total of KES 40200. This has been my dream to at least have one of two of them but I could not afford them because they were relatively expensive. I, therefore, opted for them because the climatic condition in my region is very favorable. Also, I cleared school fees of KES 12000 for my two children who are in secondary and primary schools respectively. I am so happy that they were all able to sit for their exams courtesy GiveDirectly. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuff for my family of six family members and other household items such as utensils and furniture.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means continued education for my children. I plan to achieve this through livestock farming. I will spend KES 50000 to buy 10 indigenous goats. As the goats multiply, I will sell them at a profit and use the proceeds for school fees, uniforms, stationery, e.t.c. The remaining amount will help me to start a grocery shop that will act as an extra source of income to my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the month of December, my husband sells his goat that was worth KES 7000. This brought joy to my life because he used that money for celebrations over the Christmas festival. This was the first festival since I was married to him for over 20years I celebrated like other people in the village.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Scarity of food is the biggest challenge that I am currently facing. This is because we rely on casual jobs of charcoal burning and our income is as low as KES 4000 per month. This amount can not fully sustain all our needs. Due to this, I struggle to put food on my table and we sometimes skip meals.
