"The moment when I received the transfer I felt so happy. I remember it was around 10 am when I heard a ringtone message from my phone. I was doing my daily household chores when I heard a ringtone message from my phone. When I checked it I couldn't believe my eyes, it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and inform my family members. They all celebrated with joy. I knew I would be able to buy a water tank. I wanted until the next day then I went to withdrew the money. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

"The first transfer came when I really needed it most. I had been struggling with the construction of a new house that initially needed a total of 24 iron sheets. I had already obtained 21 iron sheets that after using on roofing, one side was left open that still needed 3 iron sheets. I had been working hard to accumulate some amount to obtain them but had not been possible due to other household demands. With this first transfer, that was the first call I answered after spending KES 3500 on iron sheets, and KES 3000 on paying the labor force. I also ensured that I purchased a new piece of furniture and bedding at KES 18000 as what I was using was already old and had to dispose of off to obtain new ones. Having been struggling with the scarcity of water, I had to obtain a large water tank at KES11000. This will be a good reservoir during the rainy season as I will be collecting rainwater from the roof. This will also cut the cost of buying clean water from the vendors as it has been costing me at least KES50 a day. I can now spend the saved amount on checking other household needs. With the remaining amount, I purchased two sacks of maize that have been keeping me with my only son going as we had been spending a lot buying frequently in smaller quantities."

"I am a housewife and my job starts early in the morning after my school-going children have left for school. I start on my routine household chores such as cleaning dishes, washing clothes, and sweeping the compound before preparing lunch for my family. I spend my afternoon hours fetching clean water for domestic use and later fetch firewood. Seeing my husband coming home with food in the evening is the happiest part of my day. This is an indication that my family will not go to bed empty stomach."

"Receiving this money would mean an end to our endless all year round search for water. We rely mostly on rainwater because the river is quite a distance from here but since we do not have a water tank to harvest the rainwater we often at times find ourselves spending so much time fetching water from the river. I would therefore like to spend KES. 100,000 to purchase two 10000 litre tanks so that whenever it rains however how little it may be, we can harvest the water and have it help us for household use and watering the livestock too."

"My husband works in the maize flour industry as a casual worker. The weekly income he obtains is 2000 KES which is insufficient for the provision of our basic needs plus education for the family of seven. I often assist him to pay some small bills when it happens to get an opportunity to work. I fetch water and supply at the shopping center but when I won't be lucky to work that day it means everything stops until he sends me money, therefore, lack of a stable source of income has been the biggest hardship."
