Richard
received a $22 twelfth payment.
"Before, I did not have anything to call my own since we used to live from hand to mouth; I could not save anything from the meagre earnings that I got from working as a casual laborer. Right now, I rear my own chicken and I am able to pay school fees without so much struggle unlike before where my children would be sent from school fees."

Jackline
received a $541 initial payment.
"fetching water in our region involves walking for a long distance before getting a river and this is tedious and also time-consuming as one has to go the river on daily basis. When I received my first transfers, I spent part of it on buying a water tank so that I will be using it to store water, especially during the rainy season. I spent the remaining amount in buying some chicken and in building a chicken pen since it has always been my prayer to start poultry farming as it is luxurious with less labor needed."

Joseph
received a $524 second payment.
"I spent 30,000 KES of my second transfer to invest on my existing poultry business. For instance, I bought chicken feeds and medicine. I had started this business using my first transfer and I am yet to sell the eggs and hopefully have sustainable income. Since my land is very unproductive, I did not harvest enough maize to sustain my family for long so I used 12000 KES to purchase six sacks of maize that would last us for sometime. Lastly,I used the rest of the cash to clear fee arrears for my child who completed secondary education last year but was not allowed to collect his certificates because of the arrears."

Duncan
received a $541 initial payment.
"I spent my first transfer to invest in my two existing businesses which were not doing so well, because I lacked enough funds to restock my businesses. I was engaged in poultry farming, and I also owned a retail shop that stocked commodities like flour and sugar. I spent my transfers to add more stock to my shop and to buy feeds and medicine for my chicken. I invested in these two businesses because they are both profitable businesses and I can sustain my family with profits from the businesses. Chicken also take a short time to mature, which should bring me back profit within a short time."

Richard
received a $537 initial payment.
"My children have always been sleeping in my brothers' house despite it being small as I did not want them to go to my neighbors' house for security purposes. When I received my first transfers, I decided to use part of it in building a house for my children so that they could have their own house to sleep in. I have always wanted to start poultry farming but due to lack of funds to start this project, I decided to wait until when I will get money. When GiveDirectly came to my village, they gave me hope of fulfilling my hearts desires. After building a house for my children, I decided to use the remaining amount start this project by buying some chicken and building a chicken pen for them."

Mwanasiti
received a $538 initial payment.
"I spent part of the transfer on purchasing two cows and two goats. To me buying this livestock meant I will earn a living in the near future since this project can thrive well in our area. In addition to this, I bought 8 chicken with intention of rearing and selling in future to help cater for my children's school fee. These two projects are a source of future financial security."

Vincent
received a $22 eighth payment.
"My new goal is to start supplying chicken to the big hotels around me. I am physically disabled and I do not want to depend on people who most of the time see me as a bother. In the next four months, my livelihood shall have improved greatly and even more as compared to how it is today because I will be receiving more income from selling my chicken and even eggs."

Susan
received a $537 initial payment.
"The money has helped me so much. I know that in the near future, I will not have to use my own cash to buy white meat in the form of chicken because I now have enough stock. I will also sort out my financial needs by selling out my cows in the future and earn some cash in exchange."
