"I am a mother of five, four are grown and independent and one is still living with me. To feed my family I rely on dairy and maize farming on a small scale. During enrollment, my first plan was to buy a dairy cow. True to my word, KES 20,000 was spent on a heifer when my transfers arrived. Once these reproduce it will be a source of milk and income majorly for household consumption. Secondly, KES 4,000 was spent on a bag of maize. And as we speak a kilo of maize meal is now KES 100. The remainder will be over in a week. Earlier on, my weekly household budget was KES 1,000 spent on maize, sugar vegetables, and soap but this has gone up the due increase in commodity prices. Thirdly, KES 10,000 was spent on 1,500 liters of the water tank. This helps store more water compared to the smaller one I had. Lastly, KES 5,000 was used on the latest clothing fashion which is of high quality compared to second-hand clothes."

"With the past last two transfers, I have intentionally gone ahead to purchase farm animals namely goats. This is because I plan to rear and breed them so that they could eventually be a hard and I could always sell them afterwards for financial benefit and even perhaps eventually buy a cow that will beneficial for milk and helping me plough my land since I am old. Similarly, with the recent donation received I went ahead to purchase another goat for KES 3,000 which totaled them to three so far which has all been possible through the cash transfers from GiveDirectly"

"Upon withdrawal from the transfer, I spent KES 45,000 on purchasing three young heifers. I had been dependent on a neighbor's cow which I had been keeping for almost two years now. With the three heifers, I am hopeful that we enjoy surplus milk production in the future. I also considered purchasing iron sheets with the remaining amount since I plan to build a two-roomed house. I am looking forward to the second transfer so that I can purchase other construction materials and commence the construction work."

"We used to live in a small single-room house and with the transfer, I have completed building a two-room house for my family. I had already started building it since I did not want to reach a point where my children would have to sleep in our neighbor's house. I am glad that aside from completing this house, I am an owner of a dairy cow that has enabled me to start saving the money that I would otherwise use in buying milk."

"It was around 5pm I was busy washing clothes at the river. I hears a message notification from my phone. I did not bother to check it out since I was busy. When I was done I decided to check out who could have texted me. It was a message from GiveDirectly confirming that I have received money. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. I went home and inform my family members and everyone felt so happy. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. I stayed for two days and later went and withdrew the money."

"The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. A lot of money was being needed for school fees and buying the necessary school items and we didn't have the money. As a result, we had thought of selling our cows to raise the amount. We are however glad and grateful because we did not resort to doing so. After all, the GiveDirectly transfer came in handy and we were able to send our children to school."

"The transfer has brought a big difference in our daily lives as a family. I am no longer stressed about some debts such as paying my wife's dowry and hence I have rested from going to work each day. I only go occasionally since the money that I get paid is enough to cater for two or three days now that the budget has been reduced. As a result of this, I have had time to do other household chores such as looking after my cows as they graze."

"If it was not for the transfers, I couldn't have afforded to buy a dairy cow. I am happy that I was able to achieve this goal which will be a source of income to my family. The other difference is that I was also able to put up a celling board and buy furniture for my house."

"The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is the purchase of a dairy cow. This will key in school fees payment for my daughter who will be joining high school next year. Initially, I had one dairy cow which was bought after borrowing a loan. The repayment process was hectic but with GiveDirectly transfers my second dairy cow with ease."
