How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Over the last two years, I have concentrated my efforts on fish farming. This is a business that is not largely done by many especially in my community. I normally harvest fish in the fishpond that I have in my compound and I take them to a nearby town to look for market. The delivery is normally done on foot. Having received money from GiveDirectly and used some to improve this business, the produce has increased and I now have a new goal of purchasing a bycicle that will make the distribution easier for me. I have already hatched a savings plan from the sale of these fish and I will use the money to buy one. This, I am optimistic shall be made possible by end of the year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving support in form of cash. For every person that had a clear plan on what they needed to do, then they were able to do it and got maximum benefits from it. I am personally very grateful for the support that I got and for the change it has brought in my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $300 to buy two heifers and used the remaining amount to buy iron sheets for building a new house. The decision to buy heifers was so as to fatten them and later sell at a profit. My long term goal is to purchase a piece of land and these investments shall help me actualize the dream. I had also bought some three heifers from the first transfer and I am very optimistic that they will grow and give me more cash before the end of next year. I am also very happy and grateful that I have ready started construction of a new house. This would not have been possible had we not received money from GiveDirectly. My fish farming business was equally boosted since I was able to buy fencing poles and secure the pond. I am looking forward to a more improved living standard going forward.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6pm and I was home.I heard my phone vibrate and upon checking, it was a message from Givedirectly confirming a receipt of my first transfer.I was so excited though I had to wait for a couple of days to go and withdraw the transfer because many MPESA withdrawal shops were full.I withdrew the transfer on a market day and went to purchase the heifers as I had already planned.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the acquisition of the three heifers. This is a great joy since it affirms my holes to produce more milk. I expect to see them grow and help us in the future settle bills and also raise income to start other projects.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawal from the transfer, I spent KES 45,000 on purchasing three young heifers. I had been dependent on a neighbor's cow which I had been keeping for almost two years now. With the three heifers, I am hopeful that we enjoy surplus milk production in the future. I also considered purchasing iron sheets with the remaining amount since I plan to build a two-roomed house. I am looking forward to the second transfer so that I can purchase other construction materials and commence the construction work.
