The new goal that I have now is to start a new business selling groceries. I have always wanted to start this but I was so occupied since I had a small baby. This will be my other source of income to earn some money to meet the basic household of the family. I will save some of the money to pay school fees for my children. I am looking forward to starting this soon.

Since the money was unconditional most of the people invested in a different project. Majority invested in dairy-keeping projects and this has enabled them to cut the daily cost of buying milk daily. Some of the people who lived in small grass houses were able to build better and more spacious houses. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.

We are a family of eight and we lived in two small grass-thatched houses. The houses could not host all of us comfortably and some of my children would sleep at their grandmother's house. This was so risky since they would walk at night and the place is not fully secure. Sometimes there would be heavy rains and they were exposed to cold. I spent $450 on purchasing timber, and iron sheets among other materials that were needed. Besides that, I was able to pay the workers who constructed the new house. I rely on small-scale farming where I plant maize and potatoes. These are mainly for consumption and I did not have the surplus to sell so that I can purchase the building materials to build a better and more spacious house. Currently, we are living in a better and more spacious house with my children. We are so comfortable and we live happily. My children are no longer being exposed to cold like before. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and other basic household items that we were missing at that particular time.

It was around 5pm I was busy washing clothes at the river. I hears a message notification from my phone. I did not bother to check it out since I was busy. When I was done I decided to check out who could have texted me. It was a message from GiveDirectly confirming that I have received money. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. I went home and inform my family members and everyone felt so happy. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow. I stayed for two days and later went and withdrew the money.

Purchasing a heifer is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because I always purchase milk daily and it is so costly for me. I have always wanted to buy a dairy cow but I did not have the money. I depend on poutry keeping project and small scale farming. I plant maize, vegetables and beans. Sometimes when I sell the produce I use the money to pay the school fees and purchase household items. I had no extra money to save so that I can buy a cow. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I was in a position to purchase a dairy cow. Currently I have a heifer and I know that when it reproduce in the next few months I will get enough milk for the family. I will save the money that I would have used to buy milk for other household expenses. I will sell the surplus milk to earn an income. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has given us hope. I have devoted much of my time on this amazing dairy project.

I spent KES 27,000 on purchasing a heifer. This is because I always buy milk daily and it is so costly for me. I do not have a continuous source of income. I depend on small scale farming and casual jobs. I was not in a position to purchase a dairy cow. I spent KES 10,000 on purchasing poles planning on building a better and spacious house when I receive the second transfer. I paid KES 500 for my children who are in primary school. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and other basic household items. I am so grateful for the support.
