"It's a great opportunity that came at the right time, I have my first born daughter who will be joining form 1 next year, and I didn't have any plans on how to get her school fees. So by receiving this first transfer I will ensure I pay all her school fees, do a shopping for her and buy stationery for my other kids who are in lower primary. All the school costs roughly come to 50000 KSH, for the remaining amount I plan to start rearing chicken for profit."

"I operate a Kinyozi business in the neighborhood and this has been my source of survival aside from maize farming which one has to wait until harvesting season which is usually once a year. I have seen changes in my daily life ever since I received my transfer because I have been able to diversify my sources of income. I was able to purchase some chicken and chicken feeds using part of the transfer and I sometimes sell the eggs and use the money to purchase what I need. Due to this, I believe that I will be able to cater to my daily needs on time since I no longer depend on one source of income."

"Receiving this money means good education for my children. In 1995, I was employed as a casual laborer on a poultry farm in Kikambala. I was there for three years. I gained a lot of experience in poultry production. With the profits that were trickling in, I was inspired to start a local poultry production enterprise. I have been unable to turn this aspiration into a reality ascribed to lack of starting capital. I intend to make use of this money to build a chicken house. I will then buy 20 hens as the initial stock. This will cost me 16,000 KES. On Fridays, there is a market day at Tsangatsini center. That is where I will be selling my birds when they become sellable. A bird will sell at 800 KES. I will be making enough profit to be paying my children's tuition fees with ease."

"Receiving this money means improved well-being to this household. I am a 68 years old man having a wife and 2 sons still depending on me. With no source of income, providing for my family has been a struggle. I want to try my luck in chicken production. I will buy 20 hens at a total cost of 6,000 KES. The poultry business will be my investment. Chicken multiply and grow very fast. At a time I will be struggling, I will sell the birds and earn an income that will be used to sort our domestic needs( food)."

"I shall use this money to help pay our son's school fees. He is the only one in school. As the transfers keep coming, my husband and I shall use them for food and add some more goats and chickens. Poultry farming is a lucrative business that I would like to venture into as my full-time job."

"We spent most of the transfer money on buying a cow. We spent KES 33000 on it. Apart from that, we bought some furniture, that is two sofa-sets at KES 3500 each and two tables at KES 2500. We also bought a bag and a half of maize for our consumption at KES 3500 a bag and a few chickens that we wanted to rear. We still have a little bit of money with us which is helping us in buying a few foodstuffs such as sugar, tea leaves etc. Buying a cow and the maize was our biggest priorities upon receiving the transfer money. We wanted the cow because we didn't have any before and hence we usually incur the cost of buying milk daily. We usually buy a litre of milk at KES 45. Apart from getting milk for our consumption, the cow was going to be of great help to us in future especially with payment of school fees for our two children. We also wanted to buy the bags of maize because the maize crops in our area do not usually do well since they get affected by some disease which has been there for quite some time. As a result, we usually buy a tin of maize daily at KES 100. Buying maize and milk daily was taking a toll on us since we do not have a stable source of income. We depend on casual jobs of farming to earn a living. Thankfully with the transfer that we got from GiveDirectly, we no longer incur those costs a lot since we now have milk for our consumption and also maize."

"The main thing that I was focusing was to build a house since I had no house at all, but before starting the construction plans, I bought 4 goats and 2 chicken for KES 15500.00. I did this so that I remain with an additional thing that I can say it is due to GiveDirectly. Thereafter, I used the rest of the money in building a house. I can’t figure out the exact amount I used in purchasing the construction materials but what I know is that I didn’t have a house but through the transfer from GiveDirectly I got a house and I am grateful for that."

"I spent KES 50000 on upgrading my house from a mud walled house to a timber-walled house. This is because as a physically challenged woman I am using a walking aid and hence cannot do the smearing and have been relying on good samaritans. The rest, I spent on food and chicken layers."

"My interest is in the poultry business, I enjoy rearing chicken. I do not have any experience in the poultry business but I know about poultry farming. A chick costs 200 KES but when it is fully grown it costs about 600 KES. My target is to have about 30 of them once they are grown I will sell them and buy about six goats from the profit. This will come in handy when I want to start livestock farming."
