How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes.When I was enrolled in the program, my goal was to buy dairy cow and since I bought two with the transfers that I received, I want to commit myself towards starting a poultry farming so that I can become a full time farmer something that I have always wanted.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
So far, I haven't seen or heard anything negative about GiveDirectly. What GiveDirectly does well is empowering people through unconditional cash transfers. People understand very well their priority of needs and therefore the unconditional cash transfers, they are able to chase and achieve their dreams.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a casual labourer whereby I mainly work in farms and I am the breadwinner of the family. Although I have been getting money to feed my family and pay school fees for my school going child, I have never been able to save to do something meaningful to be able to become financially independent. I have always wanted to become dairy farmer but I couldn't afford to buy a daily cow because of the meager wages that I earn averaging to KES 300 per day. When I was enrolled into the program, I saw a light at the end of the tunnel and I could now see the possibilities of achieving my dreams. I spend KES 50000 to buy two cows and the balance to buy food for my family. I am so happy that I have four dairy cows and I can't wait for a time when I will be selling milk to earn income. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for empowering me through the cash transfers.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7:30 am and I was with my family taking breakfast. It was then that I decided to take out my phone to check if I had any missed calls or new messages from last night. I unlocked my phone's screen and I saw that I had new message. I opened it and to my surprise, I found out that it was the SMS that we had been patiently waiting for. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this and I immediately told my wife and kids the good news. They were so happy and we celebrated together giving thanks. We wondered what time could have the SMS gotten into my phone since I didn't hear it ringing at all. On checking, we found out that it was sent around 9 pm last night when we were already asleep. We then sat down and we planned on how we were going to spend it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer brought a very big difference in our lives as a family. With the cow, we now have milk for our consumption and we were also able to buy some bags of maize for our consumption. With this, we no longer incur a lot of costs on foodstuffs. We have hence been able to save up some of the money that we make from the casual jobs that we do since we only spend a little on buying foodstuffs such as sugar.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent most of the transfer money on buying a cow. We spent KES 33000 on it. Apart from that, we bought some furniture, that is two sofa-sets at KES 3500 each and two tables at KES 2500. We also bought a bag and a half of maize for our consumption at KES 3500 a bag and a few chickens that we wanted to rear. We still have a little bit of money with us which is helping us in buying a few foodstuffs such as sugar, tea leaves etc. Buying a cow and the maize was our biggest priorities upon receiving the transfer money. We wanted the cow because we didn't have any before and hence we usually incur the cost of buying milk daily. We usually buy a litre of milk at KES 45. Apart from getting milk for our consumption, the cow was going to be of great help to us in future especially with payment of school fees for our two children. We also wanted to buy the bags of maize because the maize crops in our area do not usually do well since they get affected by some disease which has been there for quite some time. As a result, we usually buy a tin of maize daily at KES 100. Buying maize and milk daily was taking a toll on us since we do not have a stable source of income. We depend on casual jobs of farming to earn a living. Thankfully with the transfer that we got from GiveDirectly, we no longer incur those costs a lot since we now have milk for our consumption and also maize.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a very good start in my marriage life. I got married a few months ago, we do not have a stable income-generating activity so far. We purchase foodstuff including milk and maize flour which is very costly considering I am the sole provider. I make KES 200 a day which is not enough for us. With this money, I plan to purchase a dairy cow worth KES 30,000. For the rest of the amount, I plan to construct a better kitchen like the one we have is just a makeshift that leaks during heavy rainfall. This also means a bigger space since my family is growing and one house will not be enough for us.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I got a short construction contract two months ago which I have been doing. It is usually the best time of my life when im working. I'm not only passionate about construction work but it also gives me income. The money I got has been keeping us through. I'm looking forward to finding another job.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I got married this year February. There was not a better time to start a family but it also comes with its financial challenges. My wife is expectant meaning she can not do most of the work. I'm the sole provider at the moment which is straining. We are also preparing to receive our firstborn. Being a casual, construction worker, this work is not sustainable, it gets over after some time and we are forced to wait for another contract.
