How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that I have is to start a small food outlet at our nearby market center. This will be my reliable source of income that would support the family's basic needs like food and education. I am a single parent depending on temporary casual activities to raise my family of 5 children. I normally earn $2 per day which is not enough to fully support our basic and educating the children. Owning a reliable source of income will reduce the burden that I currently face.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In your Opinion, GiveDirectly did well in coming up with the cash transfer that has transformed our living conditions. In addiction, the organization work independently without any influence from government officials. Lastly, having the confidence of giving us the opportunity to make the decision on how to spent the transfer was something that I feel it did well. In my opinion, there is nothing that was not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My firstborn is in class eight and was required to join a boarding school to have enough time to study for her final exam next month. I used $200 to do the shopping and clear all her fee arrears. Currently, she is learning without any interruption and her performance has improved over the last two terms. I am confident that she will be able to pass her final exam and join secondary next year. Similarly, I saved $200 for her which would assist me in paying part of the secondary fees once she join. Additionally, I used the remaining amount to support the education of the 3 other kids who are still in lower primary.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at home cooking chapati for vending. This is a business that requires me to wake up early at 3 am to start the preparation. I was busy cooking when I heard my phone ringing. Upon checking, I realized that it was the transfer that I was promised by the officers during the enrollment stages. I was extremely happy about receiving my transfer because I was very sure that I will be able to boost my business and educate my kid.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now living a stress-free life after saving enough money for my kid who is joining a boarding school early next term. Previously, I was stressed up as she was always sent home due to lack of school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my recent transfer to purchase a new mattress for KES 4800 for myself. Before the transfer, I was using an old and worn-out one which was not comfortable. I also used KES 7200 to start livestock rearing by purchasing 2 goats this is our long-term investment for my child who is about to complete his primary education. Furthermore, I saved KES 20,000 for my firstborn who is joining boarding next term. I intend to do the shopping and pay all the school fees for the whole year. I also purchased I sack of maize for KES 4500 to store enough food for the family. With the remaining amount, I bought clothes for everyone in my family of 5 members. They had few worn-out clothes which were very embarrassing whenever we gather for a community meeting.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It's a great opportunity that came at the right time, I have my first born daughter who will be joining form 1 next year, and I didn't have any plans on how to get her school fees. So by receiving this first transfer I will ensure I pay all her school fees, do a shopping for her and buy stationery for my other kids who are in lower primary. All the school costs roughly come to 50000 KSH, for the remaining amount I plan to start rearing chicken for profit.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daughter who is in ganze primary did very well in class and got 305/500 which was exemplary for us, since she had been out of school for long for lack of school fees.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently because am unemployed, all my children are on and off school for lack of school fees. I also realized that they are performing poorly because of their absence in school. Back at home we miss out on our daily meals, and forced to take one meal a day. Am forced to do casual jobs like working as a day burg, carrying water at building sites and still I get lowly paid. My parents are struggling for their grandchildren but still it's not enough to cater for all the basic needs.
