Thabu
received a $27 initial payment.
"By the time I received the transfer, the school my child attends sent him to collect overdue school fees. So I prioritized paying the unsettled amount of KES 500, and he resumed classes. Also, I purchased food worth KES 1400 and three chickens for KES 600 to rear and sell later for an income. I saved the remaining amount, approximately KES 1200 through a self-help group."

"I joined a poultry project which is coming up very well. However the project needs more capital which I had no idea where to get. I am now very glad since I plan to invest up to 100,000 KES to have a big poultry unit. I will construct a decent structure and increase the number of chicken from 60 to 200. My aim is being the biggest supplier of eggs and chicken products in this area."

"I rear chicken and ducks in my compound for sale. December was the peak season of my business. Being able to sell all my chicken and duck brought joy to my life with the profits I got from my poultry business. This gives me confidence in my business."

"In the months of December, I was able to make the highest sales from my charcoal and firewood work. I was able to make KES 4000 in that single month compared to other months where I make KES 2000. This brought happiness to my life because I used that money to buy rice and chicken for my grandchildren to celebrate during the Christmas festival."

"Receiving the money means a good house for my family. I would buy iron sheets and burnt bricks so that it should have a strong foundation. It would also help me to buy livestock such as chicken. Before my house was damaged I used to raise chickens and sell them after but they all died with the rains."

Helena
received a $276 third payment.
"All along my desire was to build a house and also start a new business. Hence, when I received my transfer, I bought 3 bundles of zinc for $31,500LD. I also used portion of my transfer to buy zinc nails and mixed nails for roofing purposes. Lastly, I bought 1 carton of chicken to start my sell and pay business. Eventually, my sell and pay business will provide additional income for me to cater to my family basic needs."

Samuel
received a $482 initial payment.
"The amount received was KSH 55000 and the funds enabled me to complete a number of tasks I had set. KSH 30000 was conveniently set aside to clear the arrears I had on the motorbike I use which I had not finished paying. Also being a farmer, I was able to purchase 3 goats and 5 chicken at KSH 9000 and KSH 1300 respectively. This enhanced my everyday skills of animal rearing. I was also able to buy some school uniforms for my kid worth KSH 2000 and the remainder KSH 12700 was put in savings account for future use."

Kipsang
received a $482 initial payment.
"We spent KES 38000 of the recent transfer on buying a cow. We decided to buy the cow because we did not have any before. We hence used to buy milk which used to cost us a lot. I at first used to buy four liters of milk daily when my wife had given birth but with time I reduced it to two liters. We usually buy a liter at KES 50. I also took KES 5000 from the transfer money and I used it to boost my business of buying and selling chickens. The business had gone down a bit. I usually depend on this business plus that of a shop to get money for buying food for my family of six and pay school fees for my children. With the remaining amount of money, we used it in buying maize and clothes for our children. I am hence grateful to GiveDirectly for their help."

Kadzo
received a $11 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am currently able to meet my daily needs, particularly food for my family without having to hustle much. In addition, I currently own some chickens an investment for myself. Previously, I had to do charcoal burning a very tiresome activity to put food on the table."
