How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
There are many things that I wish to accomplish. Sadly, the only thing that stands between me and my goals right now is the lack of necessary resources and funds. If I get enough funds, I will build a reinforcement pillar around the mud walls of my house to protect it from collapsing. Also, I wish to plaster the walls to prevent bug infestation and damage to the walls from rain.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
For me, Give Directly does best in upholding its principal role of giving cash transfers to needy people. My husband and I needed money to build a house but our charcoal-burning charcoal could not provide enough funds. By financing the construction of our new house, the cash transfers immensely transformed our lives, which we will deeply acknowledge for eternity. I only wish the cash transfers continued coming every now and then.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the entire transfer amount to build a four-room house for my family. Before, my family used to occupy a structure that my husband and I had specifically built for rental purposes. We had wished to construct a decent house for years but financial constraints hindered us from accomplishing the dream at that time. Our returns from the practice of making and burning charcoal would hardly cover any expenses beyond food. So, receiving the cash transfer was an ideal opportunity to fulfill our desire. With my husband’s support, I budgeted every penny for the purchase of construction materials like iron sheets, building poles, planks, nails, and labor compensation. As we speak, my husband and I are fully settled in our new house. Gratefully, someone already occupied the business space we left behind and we have been benefiting from the monthly rent.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The message got in when I was at home packaging the traditional wine so I could go out and sell them. Because of my inability to read, I took the phone to my brother-in-law so he could tell me the content of it. He then informed me that I had received funds from give directly. I was filled with great joy and I was also very thankful to the organization for its thoughtful gesture. I knew I would now build the four-roomed house I desired to.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
There has been a great difference in my life ever since I started receiving these funds from give directly. I am happier and less worried about meeting my daily bills. The funds have boosted my finances plus I am now able to build a new four-roomed house for my husband and I, something I never imagined I would as my wine selling business earns me very little.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My house has one room plus a veranda. I stay with my husband and often we would host many visitors. Due to limited space, it has been very hard to accommodate many people. When I got the funds from give directly, I saw it best to build a new four-roomed house that will house more people. We would also sleep on a mat that was not comfortable. I, therefore, bought a bed and a mattress. Whatever amount remained, I used to purchase some food for us as lately my job as a traditional wine seller has not been making me much and most times, we would find ourselves going to bed on an empty stomach.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I own a pub selling palm wine in my compound but I still do not have a better market set up. Receiving this money means a business boost to all my investments. I intend to build a bigger pub with spacious seats for my customers. I will also buy a sound system to fascinate my customer in the competitive market. With the remaining amount, I will increase my poultry stock and buy food with the rest of the money. I am happy my dreams will come to reality with this financial aid.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I rear chicken and ducks in my compound for sale. December was the peak season of my business. Being able to sell all my chicken and duck brought joy to my life with the profits I got from my poultry business. This gives me confidence in my business.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband was a tailor in the city but things changed abruptly after his machine collapsed which made him jobless. I had to venture into palm wine selling which is stressful when people are drunk they do not want to pay their bills. I have to sleep late at night till all my customers are out of my pub. This makes me sell at a loss every day when they are drunk. With the profit of 200 KES per day can not cater for food and medical care
